Question for Java maintainers: is "cuDF Java works with a single GPU per process" still accurate? I kept the substance of this section and only reworded it.
operating system thread when the thread first interacts with CUDA. In a multi-threaded environment,
which is typical for Java processes, using a GPU other than the default one can lead to
hard-to-debug problems, including resource leaks, invalid states, application crashes and poor
performance.
To prevent this the Java cudf API will remember the device used to initialize
the Rapids Memory Manager (RMM), and automatically set the thread's active
device to it, if needed. It will not set the device back when the cudf call
completes. This is different from most CUDA libraries and can result in
unexpected behavior if you try to mix these libraries using the same thread.
To prevent this, cuDF Java remembers the device that was used to initialize NVIDIA RMM and, when
needed, automatically sets the active device of the calling thread to that device. It does not
restore the previous device when the cuDF call completes. This differs from most CUDA libraries and
can cause unexpected behavior if you mix them with cuDF Java on the same thread.
## Dependency
This is a fat jar with the binary dependencies packaged in the jar. This means the jar will only
run on platforms the jar was compiled for. When this is in an official Maven repository we will
list the platforms that it is compiled and tested for. In the mean time you will need to build it
yourself. In official releases there should be no classifier on the jar and it should run against
most modern cuda drivers.
cuDF Java is published to Maven Central as `ai.rapids:cudf`:
```xml
<dependency>
Expand All
@@ -34,90 +31,112 @@ most modern cuda drivers.
</dependency>
```
In some cases there may be a classifier to indicate the version of cuda required. See the
[Build From Source](#build-from-source) section below for more information about when this
can happen. No official release of the jar will have a classifier on it.
Replace `${cudf.version}` with a published cuDF version, or define the `cudf.version` property in
your POM.
The jar bundles its native libraries, so it only runs on the platforms it was built for. Each
release includes a jar for each supported CUDA major version and CPU architecture, selected with a
classifier:

Document the libcudf installation prefix before the Maven build.
When libcudf is installed outside CMake’s default search paths, mvn clean install can fail to find it. Set CUDF_INSTALL_DIR to the libcudf installation prefix, including in the PTDS example that installs to $CONDA_PREFIX.
Suggested fix
After building libcudf, build the Java bindings with Maven:
+If libcudf was installed outside CMake's default search paths, set its installation prefix:++```shell+export CUDF_INSTALL_DIR=/path/to/libcudf+```+
```shell
cd java
mvn clean install
@@
cmake --install cpp/build
Then build the jar:
```shell
+export CUDF_INSTALL_DIR="$CONDA_PREFIX"
cd java
mvn clean install -DCUDF_USE_PER_THREAD_DEFAULT_STREAM=ON

Review comment at @java/README.md at line 75:
Update the Maven build instructions in the Java README to document setting
CUDF_INSTALL_DIR to the libcudf installation prefix when it is outside CMake’s
default search paths. Also set CUDF_INSTALL_DIR to CONDA_PREFIX in the
per-thread-default-stream example before its Maven build.
After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
```shell
cd java
mvn clean install
```
If you have a compatible GPU on your build system the tests will use it. If not you will see a
lot of skipped tests.
The jar gets a classifier based on the CUDA version reported by `nvcc` and the host architecture,
as listed in the [Dependency](#dependency) section.
If your build system has a compatible GPU, the tests use it. Otherwise, many tests are skipped.
