Description

Closes #23903.

Updates java/README.md, fixing outdated content and cleaning up the wording, and removes build options that libcudf no longer defines from the Java CI scripts. Also updates the outdated project description in java/pom.xml, which Maven Central displays.

Content updates:

  • Removes the pre-CalVer "work in progress ... until the 1.0 release" note, and the statements that the jar is not yet in an official Maven repository and that official releases have no classifier.
  • Documents the ai.rapids:cudf artifacts on Maven Central and the classifiers each release ships (cuda12, cuda12-arm64, cuda13, cuda13-arm64), with the minimum CUDA and driver versions from Platform Support. The jar without a classifier is the same as cuda12, per java/ci/README.md.
  • Links to the Sphinx-rendered Java API reference from Render cuDF Java API docs in Sphinx #24105.
  • Lists the CUDA libraries the jar needs at runtime: NVRTC and nvJitLink for its CUDA major version. The CUDA runtime is statically linked. Checked against the NEEDED entries of libcudf.so in the 26.10.2 cuda12 and cuda13 jars, and consistent with the libcudf conda package's run dependencies.
  • Says that JDK 8 or newer is required, explains how to build without a GPU (-DskipTests), and describes the per-thread device cache in the multiple-GPU section.
  • Notes that a local mvn install adds a classifier based on the nvcc CUDA version and the host architecture, as set in pom.xml.
  • Points to the current container build scripts instead of the legacy build-in-docker.sh flow, which java/ci/README.md marks as obsolete.
  • Fixes the PTDS build commands, which used src/cudf/... paths, and notes that release jars are built with PTDS enabled.

Build options:

Project description:

  • Replaces the java/pom.xml description, which also said "work in progress ... until the 1.0 release", with "Java bindings for NVIDIA cuDF, a library for GPU-accelerated structured data processing."

Naming:

  • Uses "cuDF for Java" as the project name in the README and the Java docs pages, instead of "cuDF Java", following Oracle's trademark guidelines for products that work with Java.

Wording:

  • "cuDF" and "Java" capitalized in prose; "the Rapids Memory Manager (RMM)" → "NVIDIA RMM".
  • Grammar, typo and phrasing fixes throughout.

Checklist

  • I am familiar with the Contributing Guidelines.
  • New or existing tests cover these changes.
  • The documentation is up to date with these changes.

Question for Java maintainers: is "cuDF Java works with a single GPU per process" still accurate? I kept the substance of this section and only reworded it.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Standardized the project name as “cuDF for Java” and updated its description to highlight GPU-accelerated structured data processing.
    • Expanded setup guidance with Maven artifact details, CUDA and architecture classifiers, minimum driver requirements, and required libraries.
    • Clarified GPU device behavior, JDK requirements, build configuration, GPU-dependent tests, PTDS, and GDS.
    • Updated container build guidance to leave Arrow build options at their defaults.

The changes update cuDF for Java naming and descriptions, document Maven classifiers and Java build workflows, and remove explicit Arrow CMake options from two CI build scripts.

This PR is mostly documentation and has low risk. The README now says NVRTC is required, but the linked issue asks for Java computeColumn to work without it, so closing that issue on merge would be misleading. The source-build instructions also still omit how to point Maven at a libcudf installed outside default paths.

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #23903 requires CompiledExpression.computeColumn to use the AST interpreter without loading or requiring libnvrtc when LIBCUDF_JIT_ENABLED is unset or false. The whole-PR diff contains no changes to the compute-column path, context initialization, or related tests. It instead documents NVRTC as a runtime requirement. The required behavior is therefore not implemented or verified.

Resolution

Change the relevant initialization or compute-column path so the default and LIBCUDF_JIT_ENABLED=false path does not require NVRTC, while preserving explicit JIT behavior. Add an automated regression test that runs computeColumn without libnvrtc and covers the unset and false environment values.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The linked issue #23903 concerns the NVRTC failure in Java computeColumn. The PR also changes project naming and general documentation, updates Maven metadata, and removes obsolete Arrow CMake options from two Java CI scripts. The diff does not connect these changes to the issue's required behavior. These changes are unrelated to the linked issue and should not be included in the issue-fix scope.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated documentation, naming, Maven metadata, and Arrow-option changes from this issue-fix PR, or move them to a separate PR with applicable linked issue scope. Keep the computeColumn fix and its regression tests in this PR.

explain that cuDF sets the calling thread’s device only when its per-thread
cached device differs from the RMM device, and does not check the live CUDA

reset to the RMM device before that thread calls cuDF; preserve the statement
that cuDF does not restore the previous device.

Document the libcudf installation prefix before the Maven build.

When libcudf is installed outside CMake’s default search paths, mvn clean install can fail to find it. Set CUDF_INSTALL_DIR to the libcudf installation prefix, including in the PTDS example that installs to $CONDA_PREFIX.

Suggested fix
 After building libcudf, build the Java bindings with Maven:

 Then build the jar:

 ```shell
 cd java
 mvn clean install -DCUDF_USE_PER_THREAD_DEFAULT_STREAM=ON
java/README.md:114-121
Minor · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win
Add the large-strings option to the PTDS libcudf command.
The PTDS section says to use the options listed in Build From Source. The cmake command at line 119 omits -DCUDF_LARGE_STRINGS_DISABLED=ON. Without this option, libcudf builds with large-string support enabled. The README says the Java bindings do not support that configuration. The release container script passes the option, so the PTDS command differs from the documented and release build.
Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Do not claim that #23903 is resolved by documenting this dependency.
At this revision, context::context calls initialize_jit() unconditionally, while compute_column checks use_jit() only after retrieving the context. computeColumn therefore still fails without libnvrtc when LIBCUDF_JIT_ENABLED=false, which is the behavior reported by #23903. Either make JIT initialization conditional on use_jit, or remove the issue from the closure claim. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
