Adds an XXL tier: email bodies up to 200,704 bytes (twice XL) with a 4 KB header, for 1024- and 2048-bit keys. Like large and XL, it is CLI-only.

Changes

  • Circuits: src/circuit-configs.json adds email_mask_{1024,2048}_xxl, using the same circuit code as main. The artifacts and VKs are committed (c0c2700 after the rebase onto main; was f4bc5f1, artifact tree unchanged).
    • Gate counts: 15,698,162 (1024-bit) and 15,713,497 (2048-bit), 93.6% of 2^24.
    • Compiled with nargo 1.0.0-rc.3 and bb 5.0.0 on Linux: 13–16 min each, ~20 GB peak.
  • CLI:
    • pinned to 10 v2 circuits at c0c2700;
    • picks XXL automatically for bodies over 100,352 bytes;
    • prints the XXL time and memory estimate.
  • Docs: README, SKILL.md, llms.txt, the lib.ts comment and the maintainer skill (build and measurement notes).
  • README fix: the line saying the web verify page doesn't check the DKIM key is now out of date, since Security fixes: DKIM key binding on verify, canonical outputs, c=simple redactions, From alignment, no proof overwrite #26 added that check.

Verification

  • Real emails: six real emails with 102–165 KB bodies, which no tier could prove before, all proved and verified locally with the pinned CLI on a 12-core, 31 GB Linux box.
    • Five are 1024-bit and one is 2048-bit; three keys came from DNS and three from the archive.
    • Each took 124–132 s, with a 22.4–22.5 GB peak RSS for bb and no meaningful swap growth.
    • So XXL needs a machine with 32 GB or more.
  • CLI verify: on a minimal-reveal XXL proof it reports proofValid: true, and the key matches DNS.
  • Web verify: the site's handleVerifyProof in headless Chromium (bb.js WASM) returns valid in 5.6 s. bb.js's WASM backend in Node also verifies with the default 2^17-point verify CRS.
  • Coverage of the private 132-email corpus: 88 → 94 emails proved. The one remaining too-long email has a 317 KB body.
  • Tests: the CLI pin test passes. Locally, tsc and tests/key-binding.test.ts show the same failures on main as on this branch (Security fixes: DKIM key binding on verify, canonical outputs, c=simple redactions, From alignment, no proof overwrite #26 passed CI, so my local node_modules is probably stale); CI here is the reference.

Proof files for XXL are about 14 MB, because the public inputs hold every body byte.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an XXL CLI-only proving tier for email bodies up to 200,704 bytes, with 1024-bit and 2048-bit options.
    • The CLI now reports estimated proving time and memory requirements for larger bodies.
    • Updated guidance covers the XXL tier’s limits, hardware requirements, and performance.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that web and CLI verification check the DKIM public-key hash against DNS or the archive.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds 1024-bit and 2048-bit XXL circuit configurations for bodies up to 200,704 bytes. It updates CLI tier messaging and documents the tier’s availability, resource estimates, and proving measurements.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 17369

Clarify that XXL is CLI-only before merging to avoid confusing users about browser proving support.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 17369

XXL increases local proving requirements substantially, but browser proving remains disabled and the existing artifact-integrity and signing-key checks remain in place. No introduced security weakness was established. Confidence is limited because the compiled circuits were not independently validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The principal increased exposure is resource consumption on the operator's local proving machine and larger public-output processing in the verifier. Email contents can select a larger fitting tier, but cannot select arbitrary circuit artifacts. The inspected change does not establish new tenant, credential, IAM, or service authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Proof metadata is not authoritative for web verification: candidates must match a known public-input shape, metadata only affects their ordering, and acceptance requires verification against a bundled VK. DKIM binding then compares the proof's key hashes with DNS or archive candidates before reporting signing identity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Direct cache and proof-file writes, fresh publication UUIDs on each attempt, and standalone publication without local cryptographic verification are pre-existing behaviors, not changes introduced by XXL. cmdProve retains verification before publication, and the web verifier independently checks uploaded proofs. Atomic recovery, publication idempotency, and server-side orphan cleanup are not established.

Include XXL in the availability guidance.

The new table adds XXL as a CLI proving tier, but Line 77 names only large and XL as CLI-only. The next sentence links website verification to “their proofs,” which leaves XXL’s verification path unclear. Include XXL in both statements.

Suggested update
-The website can prove small and mid in a browser. **Large and XL are CLI-only**, but their proofs verify on the website like any other (XL in about 7 s).

…as CLI-only

Rebasing onto main rewrote the artifacts commit f4bc5f1 to c0c2700. The CLI downloads circuits
from raw.githubusercontent.com at CIRCUIT_REF, so the old pin would 404 once f4bc5f1 is
unreachable. The artifact tree is identical (03978ea), so every sha256/vkSha256 pin is unchanged.
Also names XXL alongside large and XL as CLI-only, with its ~6 s web verify (CodeRabbit).
