fix(macos): match the selected microphone when Chromium adds a label suffix - #1138
Conversation
The renderer passes the microphone's enumerateDevices() label to the
ScreenCaptureKit helper, which resolves it by exact comparison with
AVCaptureDevice.localizedName. Chromium decorates that label with a
transport suffix ("Shure MV7 (14ed:1012)", "MacBook Pro Microphone
(Built-in)", "BlackHole 16ch (Virtual)"), so the comparison failed for
almost every device and the helper silently recorded the system default
input instead. With the lid closed that default is the built-in mic,
which delivers digital silence, so recordings came out without a voice.
Try the raw label first, then the label without its trailing
parenthetical.

Resolve the microphone by exact label, then by a device ID that names a real capture device, and only then by the label without Chromium's transport suffix, so the name heuristic cannot override a precise identifier. Move the matching into a pure function and replace the source-text assertions with a test that compiles it with swiftc and checks the results against a fixed device list, following the lifecycle test. …label-match fix(macos): match the selected microphone when Chromium adds a label suffix
Description
The ScreenCaptureKit helper finds the selected microphone by comparing the renderer's
enumerateDevices()label withAVCaptureDevice.localizedName. Chromium appends a transport suffix to that label ((Built-in),(Virtual),(Aggregate), or the USBvendor:productID), so the exact comparison almost never succeeds. When it fails, the helper leavesmicrophoneCaptureDeviceIDunset and ScreenCaptureKit records the system default input. This PR resolves the microphone by exact label first, then by a device ID that names a real capture device, and only then by the label with its trailing
(…)removed. Device names that really end in parentheses still match on the first try, and the name heuristic cannot override a precise ID.Motivation
On macOS 26.6.2 (Apple Silicon, Recordly 1.4.0, MacBook lid closed), a Shure MV7 gave silent recordings while AirPods worked. AirPods only looked fine because macOS switches the default input to them when they connect. With the lid closed, the default input is the built-in mic, which returns -91 dB digital silence.
I ran the helper from the installed 1.4.0 app with a capture config like the one the app builds, changing only
microphoneLabel.14ed:1012is the MV7's USB vendor and product ID.microphoneLabelShure MV7 (14ed:1012)Shure MV7Shure MV7 (14ed:1012)To confirm the label format, I printed the audio inputs that headless Chrome reports on the same Mac, since Chrome and Electron share Chromium's device enumeration. I then ran each label through the old and new lookup against
AVCaptureDevice.devices(for: .audio):MacBook Pro Microphone (Built-in)BlackHole 16ch (Virtual)Blackhole audio input (Aggregate)ZoomAudioDevice (Virtual)Default - MacBook Pro Microphone (Built-in)Known gap
Chromium labels some devices with their CoreAudio data-source name instead of the device name. On the test machine,
MOTIV Mix Virtual Output (Virtual)belongs to the deviceMOTIV Mix Virtual, andMicrosoft Teams Audio Device (Virtual)belongs toMicrosoft Teams Audio. Both still fall back to the default input. Matching them would need a CoreAudio lookup of each device's data-source name, which I left out to keep this change small.Relation to #1087
#1087 edits the same function. It handles an unmatched label by skipping the native mic and recording through
getUserMediainstead, but it still compares the label withlocalizedNameexactly. On its own, that would send nearly every selected mic through the browser fallback. The two changes fit together. This one lets the native match succeed, and #1087 catches the labels that still don't match. Whichever merges second will need a small conflict resolution in
