## Mission and Vision

Tekton's mission:

Be the industry-standard, cloud-native CI/CD platform components and ecosystem.
Be the industry-standard, cloud-native framework for CI/CD, supply chain
security, and workflow automation.

The vision for this is:

* Tekton API conformance across as many CI/CD platforms as possible
* A rich catalog of high quality, reusable `Tasks` which work with Tekton conformant systems
* A powerful, flexible framework for building CI/CD systems on Kubernetes
* Secure software supply chains with built-in provenance and attestation
* Seamless developer workflows from source to production
* A rich ecosystem of reusable components and integrations
* Scalable execution with support for queuing and prioritization of workloads
* Multi-cluster support, enabling workloads to run across multiple clusters

What this vision looks like differs across different [users](user-profiles.md):

* **Engineers building CI/CD systems**: [These users](user-profiles.md#3-platform-builder)
will be motivated to use Tekton and integrate it into the CI/CD systems they are using
because building on top of Tekton means they don't have to re-invent the wheel and out
of the box they get scalable, serverless cloud native execution
of the box they get scalable, serverless cloud native execution. Tekton provides
the building blocks — Pipelines, Triggers, Chains, and more — to compose
production-grade CI/CD platforms.
* **Engineers who need CI/CD**: (aka all software engineers!) These users
(including [Pipeline and Task authors](user-profiles.md#1-pipeline-and-task-authors)
and [Pipeline and Task users](user-profiles.md#2-pipeline-and-task-users)
will benefit from the rich high quality catalog of reusable components:

will benefit from:

* Quickly build and interact with sophisticated `Pipelines`
* Be able to port `Pipelines` to any Tekton conformant system
* Be able to use multiple Tekton conformant systems instead of being locked into one
or being forced to build glue between multiple completely different systems
* Use an ecosystem of tools that know how to interact with Tekton components, e.g.
IDE integrations, linting, CLIs, security and policy systems
* Event-driven and SCM-integrated workflows via Triggers and Pipelines as Code
* Supply chain security out of the box — signed provenance, SLSA compliance,
and trusted artifacts via Tekton Chains
* Support for modern workloads including AI/ML pipelines and general-purpose

## Roadmap

A project view of community roadmap items can be found
[here](https://github.com/orgs/tektoncd/projects/26/views/16).
This project automatically includes issues and PRs with label `area/roadmap`.
**Project Board:** https://github.com/orgs/tektoncd/projects/34

### 2023 Goals
The Tekton Community Roadmap project board tracks the cross-project development
roadmap for the Tekton ecosystem. It provides visibility into planned features,
ongoing work, and completed items including:

- Cross-project initiatives and community goals
- TEPs (Tekton Enhancement Proposals)
- Epics and their sub-issues
- Infrastructure improvements

### How Items Get Added

#### Automatic Addition (Recommended)

Add the `area/roadmap` label to any open issue or PR in a `tektoncd` repository.
The automation will:
1. Add the item to the project board
2. Set its status to **Todo**

Sub-issues of items already on the board are automatically added as well.

#### Manual Addition

Maintainers can manually add items via the project board interface for items
that don't have the `area/roadmap` label.

## Tekton Project Roadmaps

Individual Tekton projects maintain their own roadmaps:

- [Triggers](https://github.com/tektoncd/triggers/blob/main/roadmap.md)
- [Catalog](https://github.com/tektoncd/catalog/blob/main/roadmap.md)
