Closes #342

The error-bound tests no longer take their constants, units or arithmetic from the code they test, or their numbers from the README.

  • LibTestErrorBound carries bounds derived from the proof of each step (below). The log10, log10Unrounded, pow10, pow, precision and LibTestPowRange tests read them, and so does crates/tests/src/transcendental.rs. None of these use the README's 2e-50, 3.28e-8 of a unit or 5.0000004e-41 any more. LibDecimalFloat.pow10.t.sol's 50000005e-48 is replaced too.
  • LibDecimalFloatImplementation.documentedErrors.t.sol is deleted. It pinned the source constants to README values, which treated the docs as the spec.
  • log10's half unit comes from the oracle's log of the input, not from the result.
  • LibTestPowRange, the precision suite, and the log10, log10Unrounded, log10Ratio, pow10, sqrt and agree tests measure errors and sum bounds with LibTestExactDecimal (addPartsWide, mulPayload, quotient, cmpParts, cmpScaled, atExponent). They no longer use the implementation's or Float's add, sub, mul, div and comparisons. LibTestErrorBound.plus and times compose Float bounds the same way.
  • testPowHalfIsSqrt checks that pow(a, 0.5) is correctly rounded, exactly in 512 bits, instead of comparing it with a.sqrt(). testPowHugeExponentDirection uses cmpParts instead of Float.gt/lt.
  • pow10 references [57] and [58] are three units of the 41st digit below 1 and 1e7, from bc.

Derived bounds

  • LOG10_RAW_ERROR_E54 = 10044: log10Unrounded is within 1.0044e-50 absolute. log10Reduce leaves R within 16.7 units of C / 10^S, 1.67e-74 relative, which moves the log by under 1e-74. log10Ratio is within 1.0043e-50 below and 1.3e-51 relative above a log under 1.
  • POW10_RAW_ERROR_E52 = 32774: pow10Unrounded is within 327.74e-50 of a power below 10. exp10Fixed floors its 16 constants and multiplies, its series and its last multiply, so it is under 30.471e-50 relative below 10^m. Truncating x's fraction to 1e-50 moves 10^x by under ln 10 · 1e-50, 2.3026e-50 relative. Over a power below 10 that gives 304.71 + 23.03 = 327.74.
  • POW10_HALF_UNIT_E52 = 5e11: half a unit in the 41st digit of a 51-digit power, 5e9 units of 1e-50.
  • POW_RELATIVE_ERROR_E52 = 500000033006: pow before its integer part. Rounding at 41 digits is 5e-41 of the product. The leg 10^(f L) for a fraction f below 1 adds pow10's 3.2774e-48 plus ln 10 · f times log10Unrounded's 1.0044e-50, which is under 2.3128e-50. The sum is 5.0000003300528e-41, rounded up. The integer part's 3N·1e-75 is unchanged.

New tests: each bound is reached

The references come from bc -l at scale 130, truncated.

  • testLog10UnroundedRawErrorReached: the raw logs of 1.4482…e0 and 9.9994…e0 are 0.99988e-50 below and 0.9999e-50 above the true log. Both are within LOG10_RAW_ERROR_E54 and reach at least 99.5% of it.
  • testLog10TieWindowReached: log10 of 9.9994…e0 is 0.9999e-50 below the rounding tie at the 41st digit. Its raw log is the tie itself, so it rounds to the far neighbour. That is allowed only within LOG10_RAW_ERROR_E54 of the tie, and the distance reaches at least 99.5% of it.
  • testPow10RawErrorReached: 10^0.99998941… is 1.09e-48 above the fixed-point power and 1.0799e-48 above the rounding tie, so it rounds down to the far neighbour. Both are within POW10_RAW_ERROR_E52 (3.2774e-48). The test asserts they reach at least 1.079e-48. That is about a third of the bound: the bound adds every floor's worst case, and no input found hits them all at once.

Dead constants

LOG10_RAW_ERROR and POW10_RAW_ERROR in LibDecimalFloatImplementation.sol are read by no source code, only by NatSpec. Mutating them changes no behaviour, so M01–M04, T01 and T02 are equivalent mutants. They were "killed" only by documentedErrors.t.sol, which compared them with the README. No test pins them now. POW_GUARD is live and killed both ways.

Merge with main (#353)

#353 also added a LibTestExactDecimal.quotient(int256,int256,int256,int256), returning |a / b| as a U512 truncated to 71-72 digits. One helper remains: this PR's, which returns a signed q in [1e74, 1e76). The error bounds need its 75-76 digits, for example the pow round trip's 1e-74 term. The div and inv isNearestTowardZero checks now take u512(abs(q)), which still has more digits than any Float. #353's LibTestExactDecimal.quotient.t.sol and this PR's quotient tests are now one proof in test/lib/LibTestExactDecimal.t.sol. It asserts the exact [1e74, 1e76) range, the sign and the floor relation q·|b| ≤ |a|·10^k < (q+1)·|b|. The fuzz runs over int256 coefficients (zero included) at Float exponents, and an extremes grid covers 14 coefficients by 13 nonzero divisors at three exponent pairs. Callers also use #353's renamed mulPayload / divPayload / invPayload.

QA

Mutation probe (adversarial-mutation-test mutation-probe) on LibDecimalFloatImplementation.sol, running the whole forge suite. The PR column is head 8975508, re-probed. The main column is the earlier record at 369aee0, except T01–T03, which were probed now in a fresh clone of 369aee0. The scan entry in audit/mutation-test-scans.json is corrected in place: 19 behaviours, 12 killed before, 12 killed after, 7 equivalent.

The text of the earlier M06–M14 and H01–H02 mutants was not kept. These were rebuilt from their names. The rebuilt H02 (residual > root → residual > root + 1) is equivalent. It differs only at N − r² = r + 1, so N = r² + r + 1, which is odd. N = C·10^s with s 5 or 6 is even.

Merge of main (#421)

Merged origin/main at cb58dde (#421) in 0823227. #421's rule-derived divParts/invParts replace divPayload/invPayload, so the pow tests' 1/b reference calls invParts. This branch's 75–76-digit quotient stays the single quotient: quotient76 is removed and the div/inv exact-quotient checks pack quotient. The div/inv range errors report the input as on main, and the nearest-Float and exact-quotient checks stay. audit/mutation-test-scans.json is the union of both sides.

Hardcode the documented LOG10_RAW_ERROR, POW10_RAW_ERROR and POW_GUARD in
the test library and assert the implementation's match them. Take log10's
half unit from the oracle's log of the input, not the result. Compute the
pow range reference with LibTestExactDecimal instead of the library.

Closes #342

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
LibTestErrorBound.floor, scaled and monotoneRelative, the precision
suite's relative and absolute errors, oracleLog10 and oraclePow, and the
log10 and pow10 accuracy tests no longer call the implementation's
arithmetic. testPow10Accuracy takes its unit from the reference and its
bound from the documented constants. The single word comparison and
quotient keep the 10000 point pow10 grid inside the gas limit.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The references are three units of the 41st digit below 1 and 1e7, from
bc. LibTestErrorBoundTest checks floor and monotoneRelative at hand
worked values: 1e-2147483648 over 1 is the smallest Float, not below it,
and the monotone limit literals now encode the documented d.

log10, sqrt, agree and the precision suite now measure errors and sum
bounds with LibTestExactDecimal rather than the implementation's or
Float's add, sub, mul, div and comparisons. LibTestErrorBound's log10,
pow and monotoneAbsolute do the same, with plus and times for callers
composing bounds. atExponent replaces withTargetExponent.

Walkthrough

This pull request revises test-side exact-decimal quotient and error-bound helpers. It updates logarithm, power, square-root, and precision tests to use exact-decimal comparisons and documented bounds, and adds a mutation-scan record.

Changes

Decimal-float validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exact-decimal quotient helpers and consumers
test/lib/LibTestExactDecimal.sol, test/lib/LibTestExactDecimal.t.sol, test/src/lib/LibTestExactDecimal.quotient.t.sol, test/src/lib/LibDecimalFloat.div.t.sol, test/src/lib/LibDecimalFloat.inv.t.sol
The quotient helper now returns signed coefficient and exponent parts, and atExponent converts coefficients to a target exponent. Tests cover quotient behavior and decimal comparisons. Division and inverse tests use the replacement helper; a former quotient test contract is removed.
Independent error-bound helpers
test/lib/LibTestErrorBound.sol, test/lib/LibTestErrorBound.t.sol, test/src/lib/implementation/LibDecimalFloatImplementation.documentedErrors.t.sol
LibTestErrorBound uses documented constants, oracle-derived logarithm bounds, and exact-decimal arithmetic. Tests cover error-bound helpers and check that implementation constants equal documented values.
Logarithm and power-of-ten accuracy tests
test/src/lib/implementation/LibDecimalFloatImplementation.log10*.t.sol, test/src/lib/implementation/LibDecimalFloatImplementation.pow10.t.sol, audit/mutation-test-scans.json
Logarithm and power-of-ten tests use exact-decimal comparisons and documented error constants. The tests add near-boundary power references. The audit record reports 16 behaviors, with 11 mutants killed before and 16 after.
Power and precision checks
test/src/lib/LibDecimalFloat.pow.t.sol, test/src/lib/LibDecimalFloat.precision.t.sol, test/src/lib/LibDecimalFloat.sqrt.t.sol, test/src/lib/LibDecimalFloat.agree.t.sol
Power, precision, and square-root tests replace rounded intermediate checks with exact-decimal comparisons and explicit bounds. The agreement test extends its exponent-gap range and adjusts coefficient limits.

The quotient truncates under 2e-74 and mulParts under 2e-76, so the sqrt
round trip and the packing slack take 1e-73. The log10 product's
differences are subParts, not packed Float sums, so its slack is the
product's packing alone, 1e-66.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
monotoneRelative's floor term and crossed errors, monotoneAbsolute's
inclusive limit, pow's 3e-75 per unit of the integer part, log10 of 2,
and plus and times, each against a value checked in bc.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The round trip, inverse and precision limits sum with LibTestErrorBound
and compare with LibTestExactDecimal instead of the Float arithmetic under
test, each with the helpers' own truncation as a named term. The
precision references are 70 digits from bc, so the reference adds under
1e-69 rather than 1e-44. Rounding to 41 digits, the exact inverse, the
range checks and the one ulp flip no longer come from the implementation.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
baku-ccron and others added 8 commits October 10, 2026 12:48
Main's exact helpers are the base; the PR's bounds use absSumLte,
sumParts and cmpScaled/cmpParts. Main's LibTestPowRange, log10Ratio and
sqrt tests are taken. testSqrtUlpFuzz stays deleted: main's exact
testSqrtReferenceFuzz supersedes its first-order estimate.

The pow10 grid splits into four contiguous slices and both grids free
each step's memory, as the exact comparisons no longer fit one call.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Conflicts in the pow and log10 tests take main's exact references
(e^1 at 41 digits, roundHalfAway41, the exact 1/a for pow(a, -1)) and
keep main's log10 oracle checks beside the exact shift sum. The PR's
roundTo41 duplicates go with them.

The error measures use main's addPartsWide and cmpScaled directly, so
sumParts, absLte and minusOne are gone. quotient truncates once, as
floor(|a| 10^k / |b|) for k = 75 + digits(b) - digits(a), in
[1e74, 1e76): the old one shed digits of a first and claimed (1e74, 1e76),
which a = 1e75, b = 1e76 - 1 breaks at exactly 1e74. The slacks that
carried its 2e-74 now carry 1e-74 plus the second order terms they
leave, and the 45 digit pow references are 70 digits from bc.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
testPowHalfIsSqrt compared pow(a, 0.5) with a.sqrt(), so a shared sqrt
defect passed. It now checks the root is correctly rounded: 4a strictly
between (2c - 1)^2 10^2e and (2c + 1)^2 10^2e, exactly in 512 bits.
testPowHugeExponentDirection compared with Float.gt/lt; it now uses
cmpParts.

#353 renamed mulParts, divParts and invParts to mulPayload, divPayload
and invPayload with the same results; point this branch's callers at them.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The merge left two quotient(int256,int256,int256,int256) helpers. Keep
this branch's signed q in [1e74, 1e76), which the error bounds need, and
delete #353's 71-72 digit U512 one. The div and inv value checks take
u512(abs(q)), which still has more digits than any Float.

The two proof tests become one in LibTestExactDecimal.t.sol: the exact
[1e74, 1e76) range, the sign and the floor relation over fuzz at Float
exponents, zero included, plus the digit-extremes grid at the exponent
extremes.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…bounds

#421's rule-derived divParts/invParts replace divPayload/invPayload; the
pow tests' 1/b reference now calls invParts. This branch's 75-76-digit
quotient stays the single quotient: quotient76 is removed and the div/inv
exact-quotient checks pack quotient instead. The div/inv range-error
payloads report the input as on main. audit/mutation-test-scans.json is
the union of both sides.

Test both negative-logarithm branches.

Add cases for log10(1, -1) and log10(2, -1). The first checks a negative characteristic with a zero fraction. The second checks the nonzero-fraction conversion. The current case checks neither branch.

Check the sign of the root before normalization.

The loop while (c < 1e40) runs forever if pow returns a zero or negative coefficient. The test asserts signedCoefficient > 0, and the half power of a positive value should be positive. A regression could still return zero. In that case the test hangs until it runs out of gas and does not fail with a clear message. Add assertGt(c, 0, "root sign"); before the loop. assertCorrectlyRounded in the sqrt test has the same gap, but its inputs come from sqrt and not from this change.

Add a positive-coefficient assertion immediately after unpacking the result in
the pow test, before the normalization loop, so zero or negative roots fail
clearly instead of hanging.

LibTestErrorBound's constants are the proven bounds of each step:
log10Unrounded 1.0044e-50 absolute, pow10Unrounded 327.74e-50 of 10^k,
pow 5.00000033006e-41 relative before its integer part. The Solidity and
Rust suites read these instead of the README's 2e-50, 3.28e-8 of a unit
and 5.0000004e-41. documentedErrors.t.sol, which pinned the source
constants to the README, is deleted.

New tests show each bound is reached by a real input, against bc -l
references: log10Unrounded's raw error at 99.5% of its bound on both
sides, a log10 tie rounding to the far neighbour, and a pow10 tie
rounding to the far neighbour 1.0799e-48 past it.

@coderabbitai assess this PR size classification for the totality of the PR with the following criterias and report it in your comment:

S/M/L PR Classification Guidelines:

This guide helps classify merged pull requests by effort and complexity rather than just line count. The goal is to assess the difficulty and scope of changes after they have been completed.

Small (S)

Characteristics:

  • Simple bug fixes, typos, or minor refactoring
  • Single-purpose changes affecting 1-2 files
  • Documentation updates
  • Configuration tweaks
  • Changes that require minimal context to review

Review Effort: Would have taken 5-10 minutes

Examples:

  • Fix typo in variable name
  • Update README with new instructions
  • Adjust configuration values
  • Simple one-line bug fixes
  • Import statement cleanup

Medium (M)

Characteristics:

  • Feature additions or enhancements
  • Refactoring that touches multiple files but maintains existing behavior
  • Breaking changes with backward compatibility
  • Changes requiring some domain knowledge to review

Review Effort: Would have taken 15-30 minutes

Examples:

  • Add new feature or component
  • Refactor common utility functions
  • Update dependencies with minor breaking changes
  • Add new component with tests
  • Performance optimizations
  • More complex bug fixes

Large (L)

Characteristics:

  • Major feature implementations
  • Breaking changes or API redesigns
  • Complex refactoring across multiple modules
  • New architectural patterns or significant design changes
  • Changes requiring deep context and multiple review rounds

Review Effort: Would have taken 45+ minutes

Examples:

  • Complete new feature with frontend/backend changes
  • Protocol upgrades or breaking changes
  • Major architectural refactoring
  • Framework or technology upgrades

Additional Factors to Consider

When deciding between sizes, also consider:

  • Test coverage impact: More comprehensive test changes lean toward larger classification
  • Risk level: Changes to critical systems bump up a size category
  • Team familiarity: Novel patterns or technologies increase complexity

Notes:

  • the assessment must be for the totality of the PR, that means comparing the base branch to the last commit of the PR
  • the assessment output must be exactly one of: S, M or L (single-line comment) in format of: SIZE={S/M/L}
  • do not include any additional text, only the size classification
  • your assessment comment must not include tips or additional sections
  • do NOT tag me or anyone else on your comment

log10Unrounded tests take #354's proof-derived LOG10_RAW_ERROR_E54 in
place of the src LOG10_RAW_ERROR, alongside #429's characteristic
ceiling and ExponentOverflow tests. mutation-test-scans.json is the jq
union of both sides.

main's unified LibTestExactDecimal.quotient replaces quotient76.
The sqrt round trip now runs over every int32 exponent, so it expects
pow's ExponentOverflow with the root where the exact square is past
every Float, and adds pow's floor term 1e-2147483648 to the relative
round-trip limit near the int32 floor.
