The engine and format spec

The core that turns a geocontext.json into a map, and the specification that defines it.

• geocontext-front — The GeoContext engine: it reads a geocontext.json from any public GitHub repo (served over jsDelivr) and renders an interactive, plugin-driven map. Every basemap and data format is a small library contributors can add. Apache-2.0.
• Format specification — FORMAT.md — The complete geocontext.json schema: top-level fields, datasource types, layer types, backgrounds, DEM/terrain, and detail panels with media.
• geocontext.info — Project home: the idea behind GeoContext, a copy-paste quick start, and links to the viewer and spec.
• Live viewer — The hosted engine. Open any public repo's map at …/geocontext-front/<user>/<repo>/map.

Authoring and editing tools

Tools that write the format, so you don't have to hand-edit JSON.

• geocontext-app — A cross-platform desktop editor (Tauri v2 + SvelteKit) for GeoContext repositories: forms for datasources and layers, GeoJSON and Shapefile import, a live MapLibre preview, inline validation against the spec, and one-click GitHub sync.
• geocontext-qgis — The "GeoContext Sync" QGIS plugin: export the current map view as gcx.json + datasets/*.geojson and save it locally or push it straight to a GitHub repository via system git. GPL-3.0. (QGIS plugin listing)
• geocontextcreator — A QGIS plugin for authoring GeoContext map definitions from a QGIS project.
• qgis2geocontext — A QGIS plugin that exports a map to a self-contained OpenLayers/Leaflet webmap. (Predecessor of the GeoContext Sync plugin.)

Maps and datasets in the wild

Public repositories that publish a geocontext.json / gcx.json and render as a live map.

Contributing

Contributions are welcome! Please read the contribution guidelines first.

In short: open a pull request that adds your entry to the right section, keep entries alphabetical-ish within a section, and use the format - [Name](url) — Description.. Every map listed under Maps and datasets in the wild should point at a public repository that contains a working geocontext.json or gcx.json.
