Summary

This PR adds the venice provider (https://venice.ai), a privacy-first AI inference API, with 5 endpoints. Submitted by Venice.

It fills a gap in the catalog: no connector exposes general-purpose LLM text generation today, so an agent on Monid can't hand a sub-task to a different model — a private one for sensitive context, an uncensored one for content other models refuse, or a cheap one for bulk work. Everything here is a synchronous JSON POST, so there are no schema, engine or compiler changes.

Endpoint What it does Billing
venice#chat/completions OpenAI-compatible chat across ~150 models: Venice-hosted private models (prompts never stored), uncensored ones, and frontier models proxied anonymized. Tools, JSON-schema output, vision, reasoning effort, optional live web search / scrape Vendor claim: Venice's own cost on the response
venice#embeddings Text → vectors, 6 private + 3 anonymized models Pinned, per input token by model tier
venice#image/generate Text-to-image, private / uncensored / frontier, base64 inline Pinned, per returned image
venice#augment/search Live web search: Brave with zero data retention, or anonymized Google Flat $0.01 / call
venice#augment/scrape One URL → Markdown Flat $0.01 / page

Each meta.description says what the endpoint does and doesn't do, and points at its neighbours (search → scrape for full pages → chat with web search for a synthesized answer).

Billing

The def is the rate card. Prices are from GET /models and the Venice price sheet, checked 2026-10-08. Venice prices in USD, so the pool is US dollars.

  • Chat uses the vendor claim (D27). Every /chat/completions response carries cost: {usd, diem}: the chosen model's token rates, cached-token discounts and any search / scrape augmentation, already summed. The provider consolidate plucks it out of the payload and the claim wins.

    • diem is Venice's staked-compute balance, priced 1:1 with USD. A request is charged in exactly one of the two, so the claim is their sum.
    • With ~150 text models and per-model input / output / cached rates, a pinned token card would drift weekly. Instead the endpoint meters the same claim in nano-dollars (Unit.CREDIT at $0.000000001), so the derived fold equals the claim and usage.mismatch.derived stays silent.
    • Recorded: cost.usd 0.0000126 → evidence {CREDIT: 12600}, credits {default: 0.0000126}.
  • The chat hold is bounded. max_completion_tokens is required at the binding (D25, primary limiting knob). The estimate is a provable ceiling:

    bytes(text parts) × $12/1M + max_completion_tokens × $60/1M + $0.01 × enabled augmentations

The settle trues down to the claim, which is almost always far below the hold.

  • Embeddings: COMPOSITE of five linear per-token lines (no every block), one per published price tier ($0.0125 – $0.25 per 1M). The fns count usage.prompt_tokens on the selected model's line. Venice returns cost: null here, so the fold is the bill.

  • Images: COMPOSITE of three per-image lines ($0.01 / $0.03 / $0.09), estimated from variants and settled on images.length.

    • Only flat-priced models are enumerated (one price per image regardless of size or quality).
    • Resolution- and quality-tiered models (nano-banana-*, gpt-image-*, …) fail INVALID_INPUT rather than being approximated. That's a natural follow-up.
  • Search / scrape: leaf PER_CALL $0.01. Venice doesn't charge failed or refused calls, which matches the engine's zero-billed non-2xx (recorded: X/Twitter scrape → 400, {credits: {}, evidence: {}}).

Category

Adds the leaf text-generation to connectors/categories.ts, in the generative group beside image-generation. No existing leaf names an LLM completion, and agents is defined as hosted research agents, which this isn't. chat/completions also carries ai-search for its web-grounded mode.

Testing

  • deno task check && deno task test: 1258 passed, 0 failed, no network.
  • Real fixtures recorded with a Venice key via deno task record, trimmed, as 8 provider-level shared chains with {{request.url}}:
    • success paths: chat, chat with web search, embeddings, search, scrape, image
    • errors: a 404 (unknown model) and a 400 (refused scrape)
  • Per endpoint: replay tests (exact usage), a schema gate (rejections plus a near-twin that passes), and a live test gated on VENICE_API_KEY. All 5 live tests pass against production.
  • deno task version:check: no contract-surface changes.
  • connectors/ids.lock.json: adds exactly the 5 venice#… ids.
    • Note: ids:check on main already reports ~75 unlocked ids from other providers (bytedance, hunterio, litescrape, vaquill, …). I left those out to keep this diff scoped.

Non-goals (follow-ups if useful)

  • Streaming and E2EE chat: one-envelope engine; E2EE needs client-side key exchange.
  • /audio/speech and /video/retrieve: binary response bodies.
  • Image edit / upscale, transcription, /augment/text-parser: file inputs.
  • Tiered image models, async /video/queue, /crypto/rpc, music.

Files

  • connectors/venice/ — provider.ts, 5 endpoints (endpoint.ts, schema/inputs.ts, endpoint.test.ts), fixtures/ (8 chains)
  • connectors/categories.ts — text-generation leaf
  • connectors/ids.lock.json — 5 ids
  • openspec/changes/add-connector-venice/ — proposal.md, specs/venice-connector/spec.md, tasks.md (no design.md: the contract doesn't move)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Venice as a connector for chat completions, text embeddings, image generation, web search, and webpage scraping.
    • Added a text-generation category covering large language model capabilities, including chat, reasoning, tool calling, and structured output.
    • Added input validation and usage-based billing for Venice operations, including pricing estimates for supported requests.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a Venice provider and five endpoints for chat completions, embeddings, image generation, web search, and web scraping. The changes add request schemas, usage estimates and evidence, provider cost and error handling, and catalog registration. Recorded fixtures and replay, schema-gate, and live-gated tests cover the endpoints.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 661d3

The integration preserves fixed API routing and existing credential handling. However, the new chat spending reservation does not account for every caller-controlled source of input overhead, and its final charge is determined by the provider. Production budget reconciliation and external privacy and web-fetch guarantees remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new chat reservation is not an established upper bound on provider consumption. The schema permits message lists without a count limit, but the estimator counts content and selected tool data plus constant overhead rather than per-message framing. Repeating empty-content messages therefore does not increase the calculated hold. Settlement accepts the provider-reported charge independently of that hold. An authorized caller may consequently consume more than reserved if the provider accepts and bills the additional framing or injected context; actual budget overrun remains dependent on provider behavior and unverified host enforcement.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — For callers authorized to invoke these operations, the directly supported exposure is data sent to Venice and spending under the resolved Venice credential. Optional scraping and search delegate additional retrieval to the provider. The examined definitions do not route caller-supplied URLs through the connector's own transport; cross-tenant exposure and access to the application's internal network are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported abuse hypothesis is reservation underestimation by an authorized chat caller: grow message framing without increasing counted content, obtain admission against the unchanged hold, and receive a larger provider-determined bill. Provider acceptance, actual charges, and host prevention or reconciliation were not demonstrated, so this is an inferred budget-control concern rather than a verified exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Credential values are resolved and injected outside the engine pipeline under the existing authentication contract, whose default credential shape requires a nonempty API key. Caller input cannot replace the Venice origin through the examined endpoint definitions. Tool declarations are forwarded as request data; these definitions do not add a local tool executor.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Returned provider errors have a defined zero-usage terminal path. A synchronous transport exception occurs before settlement, and the examined synchronous execution branch adds neither retry deduplication nor durable reservation cleanup. Although the shared lifecycle contract defines unresolved reconciliation states, that does not establish recovery for an accepted Venice request whose response is lost. Exactly-once accounting and concurrent budget ownership remain host-level coverage gaps, not demonstrated PR regressions.
  • observed — Missing chat cost fields produce zero metered evidence and no positive provider credit claim. This follows the declared evidence policy, but the supplied successful fixtures do not establish that missing usage means zero upstream consumption.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish an admission bound that accounts for message framing and all enabled provider-side augmentation, backed by bounded request shapes or documented provider maxima. Define host handling for charges above the hold, missing successful usage, and response loss after upstream acceptance.
  • proposed — Where sensitive-data routing requires private models or restricted web retrieval, enforce those choices at the caller-policy boundary and document which privacy and URL controls are vendor guarantees rather than connector guarantees.

80-116: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The chat estimate is not a ceiling. Settled usage can exceed the hold.

This is a high-risk change to the rate card: usage.estimate sets the admission hold. The estimate counts only the UTF-8 bytes of message text. Some prompt tokens that Venice bills are never counted:

  • Search results that enable_web_search injects into the prompt. In chat-web-search.json, a 12-word prompt settled with prompt_tokens: 4126.
  • tools[].function.parameters and response_format.json_schema.schema.
  • Image parts.
  • The Venice system prompt, which is on by default when include_venice_system_prompt is not set.

Example: a $12/1M-input model with search on adds about 4,000 tokens. That is about $0.05 of input against a $0.01 augmentation allowance, so the settle exceeds the hold.

Required changes:

  • Count the bytes of serialized tools and response_format.
  • When search or scrape is enabled, make the per-augmentation allowance cover the injected context at the top input rate.
  • If you keep the current estimate, delete the "PROVABLE CEILING" claim from the header and the proposal.

Comment thread connectors/venice/endpoints/embeddings/endpoint.test.ts
Private, uncensored AI inference: chat completions across ~150 models, embeddings, image generation, and zero-data-retention web search / scrape. Chat bills at Venice's own reported cost (cost.usd + cost.diem); the other endpoints carry pinned rate cards. Adds the text-generation category leaf.
…text

The chat estimate now counts tool definitions, response schemas and assistant tool_calls as bytes, reserves 8,000 tokens per image part, and adds measured allowances for what Venice injects server-side: 2,000 tokens of overhead and default system prompt, 8,000 for web search, 25,000 for web scraping (Venice's scraped-content cap), 8,000 for X search, plus the per-URL scrape and per-search X fees. Drops the 'provable ceiling' claim. Adds a recorded 401 shared by every endpoint's provider-error test.

Author

Thanks @coderabbitai. All points are addressed in c2452bb (and f7dc2d1).

Chat estimate wasn't a ceiling: fixed. You were right, and the recorded web-search fixture proved it (42 bytes of prompt settled at 4,126 prompt tokens). The estimate now counts everything the caller sends and adds allowances for what Venice injects. I measured those against the live API on 2026-10-08 instead of guessing:

Input Hold, at $12/1M input
Text parts, assistant tool_calls, tools, response_format UTF-8 bytes
Each image part 8,000 tokens (inline base64 is not counted as text)
Venice overhead + default system prompt 2,000 tokens (measured ~560 + ~1,200)
enable_web_search on/auto 8,000 tokens (measured 3,700–4,400) + $0.01
enable_web_scraping 25,000 tokens (Venice's scraped-content cap) + $0.01 × 5 URLs (Venice's per-request URL cap)
enable_x_search 8,000 tokens + $0.01 × 5 searches
Output max_completion_tokens at $60/1M
  • I dropped the "PROVABLE CEILING" wording from the header, proposal and spec. Injected context is sized server-side by Venice, so these are measured bounds, not a proof, and the docs now say that.
  • New tests:
    • the hold for the recorded web-search request exceeds its settled cost
    • tools, an image, and scraping each raise the hold by exactly their allowance

Test coverage: done.

  • Every endpoint now has a provider-error test against a recorded Venice 401 (fixtures/unauthorized.json, one shared chain), alongside the synthetic 429s.
  • Near-twins that pass the schema gate: embeddings (a documented model and a single-string input), image (variants: 4), search (limit: 20), scrape (a different valid https URL with a path).
  • The embeddings happy test deep-equals the whole usage.

Security notes:

  • Scrape to private addresses: Venice enforces this server-side. Verified live: http://localhost:8080, http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data and http://10.0.0.1 all return 400 {"error":"URLs pointing to private or reserved IP addresses are not allowed"}, which the engine zero-bills. As you noted, the scrape URL is body data, so it can't redirect platform egress or reach the credential.
  • Vision inputs uncovered: each image part is now reserved at 8,000 tokens.
  • Interrupted requests, concurrent reservations, hold cleanup: these are host-side settlement behaviours, the same for every sync connector, and out of scope for a connector definition.

deno task check && deno task test: 1266 passed, 0 failed, no network. Live tests pass against production.

@sabrinaaquino The estimate changes are present. Test coverage still differs from your report:

  • connectors/venice/endpoints/chat-completions/endpoint.test.ts has a recorded 404 test, but no recorded 401 or synthetic 429 test.
  • connectors/venice/endpoints/augment-scrape/endpoint.test.ts has a recorded 400 test, but no recorded 401 or synthetic 429 test.

Please add those cases with zero-usage assertions, or correct the coverage report. The scrape near-twin has a path, but no query.

Thanks for the scope clarification.

@sabrinaaquino The chat estimate changes are present. Two test coverage gaps remain:

  • connectors/venice/endpoints/chat-completions/endpoint.test.ts tests a recorded 404, but no recorded 401 or synthetic 429.
  • connectors/venice/endpoints/augment-scrape/endpoint.test.ts tests a recorded 400, but no recorded 401 or synthetic 429.

Add the four missing cases. Assert the HTTP status, isProviderError: true, and usage: { credits: {}, evidence: {} }.

The scrape near-twin meets your stated path requirement. My earlier query-string objection was unnecessary.

Learning: For the Venice TypeScript connector, the author reports that Venice validates private and reserved scrape destinations server-side. Live checks of localhost, 169.254.169.254, and 10.0.0.1 returned HTTP 400. The scrape URL is request-body data sent to Venice, not the platform's egress destination.

Learning: For synchronous connector definitions in monid-ai/monid, interrupted requests, concurrent reservations, and hold cleanup are host-side settlement responsibilities shared across connectors. They are outside the Venice connector definition's scope.

Adds the recorded 401 and synthetic 429 provider-error tests to chat and scrape, asserts result counts against the fixtures (chat choices, embeddings data, search results), asserts billing fields are gone from chat and embeddings output, and makes the live tests assert usage shape rather than amounts.

@coderabbitai You're right, my coverage report overstated it. Chat and scrape had their recorded 404 / 400 but not the 401 or 429. Fixed in 661d3db: both now have the recorded 401 (fixtures/unauthorized.json) and a synthetic 429, with zero-usage assertions. I also edited the earlier comment: the scrape near-twin is a valid https URL with a path, no query.

All six inline threads are addressed and answered. Every endpoint now has:

  • a happy test asserting the whole usage, the fixture's result count, and billing fields gone from the output
  • a recorded 401 and a synthetic 429
  • a schema gate with a passing near-twin
  • a live test that asserts shape, not amounts

deno task check && deno task test: 1270 passed, 0 failed, no network. All 5 live tests pass against production.

sed -n '1,180p' connectors/venice/endpoints/augment-scrape/endpoint.test.ts
cat connectors/venice/fixtures/unauthorized.json

Length of output: 16613

@sabrinaaquino Confirmed the four error tests and their zero-usage assertions. This addresses the chat and scrape coverage finding.
