What

  • S4: download filenames. The new safeFilename() is exported and used by the Download button. It:
    • removes C0 and C1 controls, DEL, and the bidi and invisible format characters (U+061C, U+200B–U+200F, U+202A–U+202E, U+2060–U+2069, U+FEFF). Example: invoice‮txt.exe displays as invoiceexe.txt but is saved as invoicetxt.exe.
    • replaces path separators and \:*?"<>| with _.
    • strips leading and trailing dots and spaces. The trailing trim is a loop, because [\s.]+$ is quadratic.
    • prefixes Windows device names with _: CON, NUL, COM1…LPT9, with or without an extension.
    • caps the name at 120 characters (counted as code points), keeping an extension of up to 16 characters.
    • falls back to example.txt.
    • Behaviour change: filename="../install.sh" now saves as _install.sh, where it used to save as .._install.sh.
  • S5: storage events.
    • The listener now ignores non-string values and events whose storageArea is not localStorage.
    • New tests cover:
      • hostile variant names: markup, __proto__, near-miss case and whitespace, 1 MiB, empty
      • hostile group keys
      • sessionStorage events
      • a hostile remembered value at first connect
    • Each asserts that no selection, element, event or write-back happens.
  • The S3 test from fix(security): make VAR_PATTERN linear and add the threat model (S3, S1) #53 was flaky on a loaded host. The 64 KiB render took 409–1716 ms at a load average of 10–20. The unchanged fix(security): make VAR_PATTERN linear and add the threat model (S3, S1) #53 code failed the same way, so this was not caused by the change. The test now:
    • interleaves the small and large runs and takes the best of five;
    • applies the criterion's 250 ms bound when CI is set, and 2500 ms otherwise. The cubic pattern it guards against takes minutes.
  • The threat model (ARCHITECTURE.md), RELEASE-CRITERIA S4 and S5 (now ✅), and the README filename row are updated.

Verification

  • bun test: 66 pass, 0 fail. This held three runs in a row at load average 13.8, and once with CI=1.

  • Planted negatives. Each was applied, checked with bun build to confirm it parses, run against the S4/S5/download tests, and restored. An unmutated control passes 13/13.

    Removed control Result
    invisible-character strip 3 fail
    device-name prefix 1 fail
    length cap 1 fail
    leading-dot strip 2 fail
    storageArea check 1 fail
the old inline sanitiser in _download 1 fail
  • Independence holds: no berry or a2ml in src/, and 0 imports.

…(S4, S5)

safeFilename() strips control, bidi and invisible format characters,
replaces path separators and reserved punctuation, trims leading and
trailing dots and spaces, prefixes Windows device names and caps the
name at 120 characters with a short extension kept. The trailing trim
is a loop: an end-anchored [\s.]+ is quadratic.

The storage listener now ignores non-string values and sessionStorage
events. Tests cover hostile variant names, group keys, storage areas and
remembered values. Each new control was removed in turn as a planted
negative and its test failed.

The S3 timing test from #53 was flaky on a loaded host (409-1716 ms at
load average 10-20). It now interleaves small and large runs, takes the
best of five, and applies the 250 ms bound only when CI is set.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Downloads now use safer filenames, removing or replacing problematic characters, limiting filename length and handling Windows device names. Invalid or empty names fall back to example.txt.
    • Storage events with invalid values or from unrelated storage areas are ignored. Storage access remains safe when unavailable.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the filename and storage security guidance.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for filename sanitisation and hostile storage events. Updated rendering performance checks.

Walkthrough

Download filenames now use safeFilename() to remove or replace unsafe characters, trim names, handle Windows device names, and enforce a length limit. Storage event handling filters values and storage areas. Performance tests use repeated timing attempts and separate CI and local render-time bounds.

Changes

Browser input hardening

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filename sanitisation and download integration
src/prog-block.js, tests/component.test.js, README.md
safeFilename() removes or replaces unsafe filename characters, trims whitespace and dots, prefixes Windows device names, limits names to 120 characters while retaining short extensions, and falls back to example.txt. Downloads use the sanitised name. Tests and the authoring reference cover these rules.
Storage access and event filtering
src/prog-block.js, tests/component.test.js, ARCHITECTURE.md, RELEASE-CRITERIA.adoc
localStore() returns null if storage access throws. Storage events require a string value and are ignored when a specified storage area does not match accessible local storage. Tests cover hostile inputs and remembered values. The architecture and release criteria record the storage-event checks.

Performance test bounds

Layer / File(s) Summary
Performance measurement and bounds
tests/component.test.js, RELEASE-CRITERIA.adoc
Performance helpers make up to five timing attempts. The tests check tokenisation scaling and use a 250 ms render-time bound in CI or 2500 ms otherwise. The release criteria record both bounds.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 07b2c

Download names can retain an unsafe trailing dot at the length boundary, and the scaling test can fail on otherwise acceptable timings. These bounded issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 07b2c

The changes strengthen browser-local input handling without adding privileges or cross-service access. No introduced or worsened security concern was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns native browser download behavior and storage-event failure cases.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected attackable outcomes remain browser-local: selection of authored variants in matching persisted groups and naming of a reader's download. These paths introduce no new service identity, credential access or privileged filesystem authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A synthetic storage event with null or omitted storageArea can still select a valid authored variant in a matching persisted group. This reachability predates the PR and is not expanded by it. Exact name matching and silent replay continue to constrain the outcome, so this is a boundary limitation rather than an introduced architecture concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The storage-area check filters explicitly supplied non-local areas; it does not authenticate event origin. Hostile names cannot define new variants because selection uses exact lookup against variants parsed from authored templates. Tests exercise unknown names, hostile group keys and explicit sessionStorage rejection.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Storage reads and writes tolerate access failures, with persistence treated as a convenience. First connection reads remembered state without notification; disconnect removes group membership, preventing later group replay from targeting that disconnected block. These ownership and recovery behaviors are preserved by the PR.

I am a rabbit; filenames now shed their disguise.
I nibble strange marks and tidy the names.
Storage events pass checks before they hop through.
Timers try again, with bounds set in place.
I thump my paws for tests that complete.

Answers both CodeRabbit findings on #54. Truncating a name whose
extension is too long to keep could leave a trailing dot; the trim now
runs again after the cut, with a test at that boundary (its removal
fails the test). bestRatio() combined minima from different pairs; it
now keeps the lowest ratio of a pair measured back to back.

… validators (S6, T2) (#57)

## Summary

Step 3 of the progblocks plan, covering RELEASE-CRITERIA **S6** and
**T2** (DEBT C10 and T4).

- **S6.** New `tests/property.test.js` with three seeded property tests
over `tokenize()` and rendering:
- Generator: in-file mulberry32, seed `0x5eed0006`, 500 generated
sources per property, no new dependency.
- Inputs mix variables with and without defaults, near-miss braces,
`<script>`/`<img onerror>`/`</code>` markup, NUL, bidi and astral
characters.
  - Properties:
    1. Segments reproduce the source exactly.
2. Text segments are never empty or adjacent, and variable names match
`[\w:-]+`.
3. The code panel shows exactly the substituted text, and the shadow
tree holds only the elements the component builds: no `script`, `img`,
`iframe` or `a`, and only text nodes and `span.var-value` inside
`<code>`.
4. (added after review) One variable between brace-free text is
recognised with the generator's name and default and rendered as that
value.
  - A failure names the seed and the case.
- **T2/T4.** Deleted:
  - `src/k9-validator.js`, which always returned "valid";
  - `contracts.ncl`, which only type-checked its own self-description;
  - the `just check` recipe and `package.k9`'s `NICKEL validate` line.
- **Dust probe.** `fake-validator-methods` is now a regression guard:
`test ! -e src/k9-validator.js`.
- **Docs.** Updated AGENTS, ARCHITECTURE, AUDIT, CONTRIBUTING, README,
EXPLAINME, DEBT, RELEASE-CRITERIA, CHANGELOG, the deed, the must/dust
contractiles and four wiki pages.
- Historical entries were left as history: the B1 bug in `bust.ncl`,
`archive/state-v1.txt`, and the "original finding" blocks.

Closes # — no issue; this is plan step 3, under the owner-adopted
RELEASE-CRITERIA.

## Type of change

- [ ] 🐛 Bug fix: no behaviour of the component changes.
- [ ] ✨ New feature: none.
- [ ] 💥 Breaking change: the removed files had no consumers. Nothing
imported `k9-validator.js`, and only the optional `just check` read
`contracts.ncl`.
- [ ] 🕳️ Soundness fix: not a checker fix as such, though it removes a
validator that could not fail.
- [x] 📖 Documentation
- [x] 🧹 Refactor / tech debt: dead, misleading files deleted.
- [ ] ⚡ Performance: none.
- [x] 🔧 Build / CI / tooling: new tests; the `just check` recipe
removed.

## 📌 New pins

- Head SHA: **79c22819523e18c41911f3b4a6d9f51459912311**
- New or changed pins: **none**. No `uses:`, `actions.lock`, lockfile or
container digest is touched.

## How has this been verified?

- `bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun test`: **82 pass, 0 fail**,
across 7 files. `tests/property.test.js` contributes 4 tests.
- **Generator census**, so the properties are not vacuous: of the 500
cases, 431 contain a variable, 353 a default, 118 a `<script>` fragment,
and 23 are empty.
- **Planted negatives**, each reverted afterwards (the reverted file is
byte-identical to the original):
- Rendering text segments through `span.innerHTML` fails *"the code
panel shows exactly the substituted text and creates no authored
elements"*, at case 2.
- Removing the trailing-text `segments.push` in `tokenize` fails
*"segments reproduce the source exactly"*, at case 3.
- A tokenizer that finds no variables (`matchAll` replaced by `[]`)
passes the first three properties and fails *"one variable between plain
text is recognised and substituted"*: the fourth property uses the
generator, not `tokenize()`, as its oracle (raised by CodeRabbit).
- An empty `<span>` appended inside each variable span fails only the
new assertion *"element inside a variable span"*.
- `just probes`: **36 pass, 0 fail**.
- Planted `src/k9-validator.js` → 35 pass, 1 fail
(`fake-validator-methods`); after removal → 36 pass.
- `nickel export` succeeds on the edited `dust.ncl` and `must.ncl`.
- `./tools/check-wiki-health.sh`: **PASS** (9 registered pages).
- Independence: `git grep -niE 'berry|a2ml' src/` → nothing; `src/` has
no `import`.
- `git grep -e k9-validator -e contracts.ncl` → only "deleted on
2026-10-06" notes, CHANGELOG, and kept-for-the-record history.
- `standards/.githooks/docstring-scan.sh --staged --check`: rc 0, but it
**skips `.js`**, so it gives no verdict here. Checked by hand instead:
every new function in `tests/property.test.js` has a `/** */` docstring.

## Checklist

- [x] My commits are **signed**: `git log -1 --format=%G?` → `G`.
- [x] I ran the project's own checks and tests locally (`bun test`,
`just probes`, wiki health), and they pass.
- [x] New files carry the correct SPDX identifier.
`tests/property.test.js` is `MPL-2.0`. No file was relicensed.
- [x] Docs are updated, and no claim overstates the code. S6 and T2 are
marked ✅ with the evidence above, and C10 and T4 are cleared.
- [x] No soundness hole introduced. The run lines changed in this PR
were shown to fail on a planted violation.

## Notes for reviewers

- `package.k9` is kept, though nothing consumes it (DEBT D4). Whether to
retire it as well is outside T2's text, so it is recorded in findings,
not done here.
- RELEASE-CRITERIA S1's "Now" cell still says S4 and S5 are open; that
went stale with #54. It is left for a docs pass so this diff stays
scoped.
