@MihaiSurdeanu, this worked if I manually did a publishSigned and then sonaUpload. I am not sure that implies that release will work, particularly since that seems to do a sonatypeReleaseAll. Since it was just a sonaUpload, I could delete it from maven central and nothing went out to the world. I am not yet able to test on my own domain. Apparently that requires manual verification by sonatype and they are not finished. There are several places to store the credentials and it was done differently for different projects depending on how old they are. For this I have on my computer a file ~/.sbt/1.0/credentials.sbt with contents like below with the user and password coming from the tokens. It is important that the host be correct.

credentials ++= Seq(

  /**
   * Entries should look like this:
   *
   * Credentials(
   *   "realm",
   *   "host",
   *   "user",
   *   "password"
   * )
   */

    // Sonatype (maven central) for me with access to CLU Lab repos
  Credentials(
    "Sonatype Nexus Central Repository Manager",
    "central.sonatype.com",
    "user",
    "password"
  )
)

Thanks @kwalcock !
I'll merge and then try a sbt release.

@kwalcock : I think we're making progress. I now see this error:

[error] java.lang.IllegalStateException: No credential is found for oss.sonatype.org. Prepare ~/.sbt/(sbt_version)/sonatype.sbt file.

I copied ~/.sbt/1.0/credentials.sbt to ~/.sbt/1.0/sonatype.sbt but that didn't fix it. Do I need a different directory instead of "1.0"?

@MihaiSurdeanu, it should be looking for central.sonatype.com rather than oss, so something is not right. I believe that it processes all *.sbt files in the ~/.sbt/1.0 directory, so the filename is not important. You would probably need to restart sbt if files like that change, or files in the project directory.

@MihaiSurdeanu, if you would like to pass on releasing this project to see if it will work for anybody at all and then take the next project based on anything that is learned here, let me know. I have some time to do it.

Yes, I would appreciate it!
I discovered another credentials file (.sbt/.credentials) that was pointing to the old oss URL, but that wasn't the problem. I still get the same error and I don't know what else to do. I will send you my credentials separately.
Thank you!!

@MihaiSurdeanu, it's still not working right and the site is returning an error message even if I manually upload something via their web page, so I sent an email to support. In your credentials you will need to not use central.sonatype.org but .com instead. However, that won't yet make it work.
