Fixes #389.

Confirmed sidebar deletion now validates linked worktrees on bounded background IO, closes the selected workspace only after removal work is admitted, and runs Git or the configured module remove provider off the app loop. The branch is preserved; completion and failures are reported in the UI. Queue rejection and invalid targets leave the workspace intact.

Verification:

  • cargo fmt --all --check
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --locked
  • cargo build --locked
  • npm --prefix website run build
  • Real debug client/server under an isolated target/issue389-dev/home: opened a sibling worktree, used right-click Delete Worktree and y, observed pending/success toasts, confirmed the row and checkout disappeared while the main checkout and branch remained, then created another worktree successfully.

Windows behavior was not live-tested on this macOS host.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 4/5

The PR should not merge until failed worktree removal can restore the checkout on the shipped FreeBSD target.

Fix All in CodexFindings

  1. P1 FreeBSD cannot restore failed deletions ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
src/platform.rs:85-91
FreeBSD is a shipped release target, but this helper always returns `Unsupported` there. If Git refuses to remove a staged worktree, restoration fails and the checkout stays at the hidden staging path. Its workspace has already closed, so the user must recover the checkout manually. Add an exclusive restore for FreeBSD or avoid staging when rollback is unavailable.

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

The PR moves confirmed built-in worktree deletion to identity-checked background removal, stages the checkout before invoking Git, adds exclusive rollback helpers and regression tests, and documents the recovery behavior.

  • Replacement checkouts at the original path are preserved.
  • Failed removal cannot automatically restore the checkout on the shipped FreeBSD target.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Worktree deletion is available only when Luvus can verify the checkout’s identity, helping prevent deletion of a different directory that has taken its place.
    • If removal fails, Luvus attempts to restore the checkout without overwriting another directory. When safe restoration isn’t possible, it retains the staged files and reports where they are.
    • Automatic restoration is supported on macOS, Linux, and Windows; other platforms may require manual recovery.

Worktree deletion now requires a captured directory identity. Confirmed deletion stages and verifies the checkout before removal, and attempts safe restoration if removal fails.

Changes: Worktree deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exclusive directory restoration
src/platform.rs, Cargo.toml
Adds no-replace directory restoration on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Other platforms return an unsupported error. Pins Unix libc to 0.2.187.
Identity-bound removal and rollback
src/git/removal.rs, src/git/mod.rs
Adds removal that validates and stages the linked checkout, repairs Git registration, and removes only the staged path. Tests cover successful removal, path substitutions, failure recovery, and restoration that does not overwrite an existing destination.
Delete action integration
src/app/mod.rs, website/src/content/docs/docs/guides/worktrees.mdx
Shows the delete action only when a linked worktree has a captured identity. Confirmed deletion calls the new removal flow. The guide documents removal and recovery behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 564be

A rare filesystem verification error can strand a deleted worktree outside the UI; restore it before reporting failure.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d4c62

The change adds checks that reject a checkout replaced after confirmation. A narrow race remains between the last check and removal, but that path-based removal behavior also existed before this change. No new security issue is established; Windows behavior and configured-provider behavior remain less certain.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported attack scenario requires another actor able to replace the local checkout directory during deletion. The resulting exposure is a different directory at the selected path, not an established remote or cross-tenant entrypoint.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Deletion rejects missing identity and rechecks the confirmed workspace and directory before admitting removal. The final checks precede, rather than atomically constrain, provider or Git execution.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Queue-admission and provider-conflict errors clear the in-flight request before closure. After admission, completion or failure clears that marker and reports a result, without restoring a closed workspace.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For stronger protection against concurrent filesystem replacement, make expected directory identity an enforced precondition of the destructive operation where possible, rather than relying solely on a preceding path check.

Move provider parent cleanup off the app loop.

When the provider removal succeeds, the completion callback calls remove_worktree_explicit. Its ready-provider-result branch calls finish_explicit_worktree_remove, which runs std::fs::remove_dir(parent) synchronously while processing IoCompleted on the app loop. A slow parent-directory cleanup can therefore freeze the UI even when fallback cleanup runs in a worker.

Move only the parent-directory removal into the provider worker after successful provider removal. Keep finish_explicit_worktree_remove on the app loop for application-state updates such as close_workspace. Do not perform a second Git removal.

Do not offer deletion when the worktree identity is unavailable.

confirm_worktree_delete stops with "delete failed: could not verify worktree identity" when a linked worktree has no directory_identity. The menu still adds WsMenuItem::DeleteWorktree for every linked worktree, so the action can be presented but can never start. If this fail-closed behavior is intentional, hide the action when the identity is missing. Do not recapture an identity blindly, because the captured identity prevents deletion of a replacement checkout.

Protect both destructive boundaries from same-path replacement.

A replacement can appear after the final identity check and before git worktree remove --force. Git removes the registered worktree at that path, so it can delete the replacement before the later identity check runs. The existing remove_dir_all check has the same check-then-use window.

Use an identity-aware or synchronized removal operation for both the Git removal and recursive filesystem removal. A second standalone identity check is not sufficient.

Restore after a post-removal metadata error.

symlink_metadata(&self.path) can return a non-NotFound filesystem error after git worktree remove --force succeeds. The current branch returns without calling restore. If the staged checkout remains, Drop cannot remove its non-empty staging parent. The checkout then remains at the staging path while the caller has already closed the workspace.
