This repository contains a collection of all images from the ONiT corpus that were automatically extracted from the digitized bookprints with the Illustration Detector tool by the Visual Geometry Group at the University of Oxford. The goal of the interdisciplinary ONiT project Ottoman Nature in Travelogues (ONiT) is to analyze Ottoman “nature” in travelogues on the Ottoman empire, printed between 1501 and 1850.
Due to updates that occurred in the Austrian National Library data during the course of the project, a subset of direct links to the extracted images provided in this collection do not point to the correct page of the digitised book anymore. Please be cautious when reusing the IIIF links and check the data before using it.
An updated version of the extracted image data, which includes additional images extracted during the final project year and a dump of the all image files, will be published at the ÖNB Labs: https://labs.onb.ac.at/en/datasets/.
The IIIF_Links_D16-E19 folder contains a first collection of direct links leading to all images at the Austrian National Library IIIF repository extracted at the end of the first project year.
An updated version containing the IIIF links to all images extracted by the end of the second project year is included in two JSON files. They include all elements that were automatically recognised as images by the tool. The following two files contain:
- "ONiT_extracted-images_full.json": Final version of the full extracted image dataset from all ONiT travelogues.
- "ONiT_curated-images_D-E-F-L.json": A curated version of the extracted image dataset containing only images with nature representations (flora, fauna, landscapes, and maps).
Ulterior images were digitised during the course of the ONiT project. Those were extracted during the final project year and will be included in a future update of the dataset (see https://labs.onb.ac.at/en/datasets/).
