[FEA] Add shared LTO UDF compilation and fragment ownership - #25030
Superseded by #25036, layer 1 of registered GitHub native stack #25040. The replacement keeps this PR's latest content and ready/draft status. This PR retains its original review history.
Description
This pull request is the first step in adding LTO Reductions support
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a public API for compiling CUDA source into reusable LTO fragments, with support for in-memory headers and caller-supplied include paths.
Added public types for representing LTO formats and fragments, including an owning compiled-fragment type that can expose a non-owning view.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of dictionary-column inputs during UDF type reflection, using the dictionary keys’ value types.
Improved support for optional-valued LTO UDFs with nullable dictionary columns.
The PR adds public LTO fragment types and a CUDA-to-LTO-IR compiler with header and include-path support. It updates JIT reflection and transform integration, adds compilation and nullable dictionary tests, and changes the underlying type used by cudf::errc.
Changes: LTO UDF compilation and transforms
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Public LTO fragment contract cpp/include/cudf/udf.hpp, cpp/include/cudf/transform.hpp
Adds public LTO binary and fragment types, an owning compiled-fragment wrapper, and a compiler declaration. The transform header includes the UDF header and removes its former binary-type enum.
Adds compilation with caller-provided include paths and validation for null source and mismatched header spans. Adds a test that compiles source with a supplied header.
JIT reflection and kernel references cpp/src/jit/reflect.hpp, cpp/src/jit/reflect.cpp, cpp/src/jit/cache.hpp
Adds reflection helpers and RTCX binary-type conversion. Changes dictionary input signature reflection to use input value types. Splits non-owning kernel_ref from the owning kernel.
LTO transform and nullable inputs cpp/src/transform/transform.cu, cpp/include/cudf/column/column_device_view_base.cuh, cpp/tests/transform/transform_lto_test.cpp
Uses the JIT binary-type conversion in the transform path. Both nullable-element methods deduce their optional return type. Adds a nullable dictionary transform test.
Error-code underlying type
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Error integer alias and enum type cpp/include/cudf/errc.hpp
Adds error_int as cuda::std::int32_t and uses it as the underlying type of cudf::errc. The enumerator values remain unchanged.
NVIDIA/cudf#23242: Adds an experimental regex JIT pipeline that compiles CUDA source to LTO IR; this PR extracts shared compilation and fragment ownership from that implementation.
NVIDIA/cudf#24766: Changes nullable_element to derive its optional type from element<T>(); this PR applies the same contract.
NVIDIA/cudf#24425: Introduces shared JIT reflection and LTO interfaces that this PR continues and updates.
NVIDIA/cudf#24476: Adds consumer UDF calls that link lto_fragments and use cudf::errc; this PR provides shared compilation, fragment ownership, and the 32-bit errc type.

Merge Risk: High · up to db108
The JIT cache still has a compile-blocking argument mismatch, and the public error-code representation change can break separately compiled consumers. These issues should be resolved before merging.

Explanation
The title names the main change: adding shared LTO UDF compilation (compiled_fragment and compile_cuda_to_lto_ir) and fragment ownership (the non-owning kernel_ref split from the owning kernel). The changeset contains these elements in udf.hpp, cache.cpp, and cache.hpp. The title is specific and concise, and it fits the primary change in the diff.

Explanation
The description states that the PR adds compiled_fragment and compile_cuda_to_lto_ir, adds a non-owning kernel reference, changes errc to int32_t for NUMBA ABI compatibility, and fixes dictionary value reflection in nullable callback signatures. Each of these points matches the file-level changes in the raw summary, so the description is directly related to the changeset.

Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 12 included reviews per hour; 10 remain after this review.
Accept const-element spans for include_names and includes.
The public API takes std::span<char const*>. A caller cannot pass char const* const names[], a std::array<char const* const, N>, or a const span. The internal compile_fragment already accepts std::span<char const* const>. Change the public signature now, because the API is hard to change after release.
Also update the friend declaration at Lines 55-58 and the definition in cpp/src/jit/cache.cpp.

Review comment at @cpp/include/cudf/udf.hpp around lines 72 - 75:
Update the public compile_cuda_to_lto_ir signature, its friend declaration, and
its definition to accept std::span<char const* const> for include_names and
includes, matching the const-element span already used by compile_fragment and
preserving include_paths unchanged.

Strip the reference from value_type in the mutable nullable_element.
For a rep-layout T, the mutable element<T> returns T&. The decltype at line 744 therefore gives T&, and the function returns cuda::std::optional<T&>. libcu++ optional does not accept reference types, so instantiating nullable_element<T> on a mutable view with a rep-layout T can fail to compile. The previous code returned optional<T>.
The const view at lines 539-540 uses the same pattern, but its element<T> returns by value. It is not affected.
🐛 Proposed fix
template <typename T>
[[nodiscard]] __device__ auto nullable_element(size_type element_index) const noexcept
{
- using value_type = decltype(element<T>(element_index));+ using value_type = cuda::std::remove_cvref_t<decltype(element<T>(element_index))>;
if (is_null(element_index)) { return cuda::std::optional<value_type>{}; }
return cuda::std::optional<value_type>{element<T>(element_index)};
}

Review comment at @cpp/include/cudf/column/column_device_view_base.cuh around
lines 741 - 745:
Update the mutable `nullable_element` so its `value_type` is the unqualified,
non-reference type of `element<T>(element_index)`, allowing
`cuda::std::optional` to hold rep-layout values. Preserve the existing null and
value-return behavior, and leave the const-view implementation unchanged.
