Description

This PR makes optimizations to the preprocess_string_offset_kernel. The changes are sa follow:

  • Use 4 warps per block, with each warp processing a separate page.
  • Load data into 1 KB shared memory windows - using aligned, vectorized asynchronous copies if the architecture supports it.
  • Adding a fast path for full-window refills: two 16-byte copies per lane.
  • Simplifying the scan loop

Checklist

  • I am familiar with the Contributing Guidelines.
  • New or existing tests cover these changes.
  • The documentation is up to date with these changes.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved reading of plain-encoded strings across Parquet page boundaries, including partial reads and nullable values.
    • Invalid string lengths and page overruns now report an error rather than producing incomplete or invalid string offsets.
    • Reading remains reliable with varied string lengths and page groups, and malformed lengths—including negative and extreme values—are handled consistently.

The Parquet plain-string offset preprocessing kernel now processes pages in CTA groups and scans each active page with a warp. Tests cover full and bounded reads across page groups, including nullable values, and verify errors for four corrupt string lengths.

Changes: Plain-string offset preprocessing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Warp-cooperative scans and offset handling
cpp/src/io/parquet/page_string_decode.cu
Warp-cooperative shared-memory windows support buffered scans, with asynchronous copies on supported architectures and scalar-copy fallbacks. Sequential and buffered scans validate string lengths and fill remaining offsets through the terminal offset.
Grouped page setup, launch, and tests
cpp/src/io/parquet/page_string_decode.cu, cpp/tests/io/parquet_reader_test.cpp
The kernel groups pages across CTAs and assigns a warp to each active page. The launch uses 128-thread CTAs. Tests cover full and bounded reads across page groups and check that four corrupt lengths throw cudf::logic_error.

Minor · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Fix the kernel doc comment: the CTA has four warps, not eight.

Line 1318 says the kernel uses "eight warps per CTA". The code sets string_offset_warps = 4. The launcher uses block_size = string_offset_warps * warp_size, which is 128 threads. The same comment block also describes the CTA-wide setup barriers. A wrong warp count there can mislead a maintainer who changes the launch configuration.

The comment also has two other errors:

  • It documents a @param stream that the kernel does not take.
  • It does not document num_pages.

Thanks for the optimization, the speedups look great. Two general requests:

  1. Avoid inline PTX in libcudf kernels. Unlike devtech, we don’t have the bandwidth or access to the latest instructions to maintain hand-written PTX, so code like this is hard for cudf developers to own long term. Luckily, CCCL provides most (if not all) of the facilities we need.
  2. Use sized types throughout the PR. There are raw ints/unsigneds across the new code (constants, locals, loop counters, parameters like lane). Please use int32_t/uint32_t etc. consistently. I marked the ones in the suggestions and the top-level constants, but the rule applies to the whole diff.

could we use any CCCL features instead of inline PTX?

cg::memcpy_async lowers to the same two LDGSTS.E.BYPASS.128 per lane on sm80+ (checked with a small kernel on sm_80 and sm_100) and to plain copies below, so the #if __CUDA_ARCH__ ladder, __cvta_generic_to_shared and the commit/wait asm all go away. Same pattern as

cuda::memcpy_async(group, _smem_stage, _start, static_cast<size_t>(len), *_copy_barrier);
. Needs #include <cooperative_groups/memcpy_async.h> and <cuda/barrier>.

Out of curiosity do we know how much speedup we get on something like end to end read parquet time (Assuming string heavy datasets) with this optimization? (no worries if not)

Unreachable today (unsigned cutoff below). Once that's fixed, bytes == 0 lands here and returns without writing any offsets. The page.bytes < 4 check below already handles it.

Please avoid goto, next statements. Instead please use booleans and if/else. Also please replace the do-while loop if possible.

AI pointed out that every CTA now runs setup_local_page_info 4 times back to back on all 128 threads (96 idle per setup, plus barriers). This is likely why Tiny regressed 0.58x. Did you try 2 warps/block, or is the small-page regression acceptable here?

Let's fix the cutoff rather than preserve it. The unsigned wraparound sends pages with lots of nulls and short strings (bytes / num_input_values < 4) to the single-lane sequential path, which is the slowest path for them. The buffered path handles them fine (with the bytes <= 0 early return removed). Also, let's keep the named threshold from the old code.

nit: skip_rows/num_rows don't produce a page mask (it's all true here), so masked pages aren't exercised.

These are 4x17 B strings in one small page, so this only hits the buffered partial-window path. Please add a variant with long strings (avg > 64 B) to cover the rewritten error check in read_string_offsets_sequential, and ideally one with a page > 1 KiB to hit the full-window path.
