Description

The binary_operation API is redundant given cudf::transform performs the exact operation.
The duplicated API & kernel are a maintenance burden.
cudf::binary_operation JIT has been reimplemented to forward to cudf::transform.

To preserve the type support matrix for binary_operation's PTX UDFs, we've made transform forward to transform_lto for PTX UDFs. This uses nvJitLink instead of the brittle legacy PTX-to-CUDA C++ parser.
filter_join_indices was also migrated to use this process.

The existing PTX and CUDA C++ UDF parsing and renaming code will be dropped in another PR once we standardize a new UDF API.

The soft breaking changes:

  • Users now have to respect the general PTX compatibility and linking rules. This is the correct way to link PTX; it wasn't previously being respected.
  • binary_operation may now make device synchronization calls (not a public implementation detail)

Follows up #23566

Checklist

  • I am familiar with the Contributing Guidelines.
  • New or existing tests cover these changes.
  • The documentation is up to date with these changes.

Remove transform_extended and multi_transform declarations and implementations. Existing Python and Java UDF integrations already call transform directly.
Forward the legacy PTX overload to transform and remove its dedicated JIT kernel and unused Cython declaration. Update valid-row assertions and PTX regression coverage, and add a benchmark comparing binary operations with direct transform calls.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Deprecations
    • The PTX-based column-to-column binary_operation API is deprecated as of release 26.12. Use cudf::transform instead.
  • Behavior
    • The deprecated API now uses the transform operation internally. It returns an empty output column when both input columns are empty.

The PTX-based column-to-column binary_operation overload is deprecated and now calls cudf::transform. The dedicated binary-operation JIT kernel and its embedded build entry are removed. Related tests update their expected-column checks and suppress deprecation warnings.

Changes: PTX Binary Operation Migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
API deprecation
cpp/include/cudf/binaryop.hpp
The PTX-based overload is documented as deprecated in release 26.12 and directs callers to cudf::transform. Its declaration has a deprecation attribute with the same guidance.
Transform route and JIT removal
cpp/src/binaryop/binaryop.cpp, cpp/src/binaryop/jit/kernel.cu, cpp/CMakeLists.txt
The PTX overload returns an empty output for empty inputs. Otherwise, it adapts the PTX function and calls cudf::transform with two inputs, one output, and null_aware::NO. The dedicated JIT kernel and its embedded source entry are removed.
Binary-operation test updates
cpp/tests/binaryop/*, cpp/tests/streams/binaryop_test.cpp
Expected values and validity are constructed from input columns. PTX tests suppress deprecation warnings, and the stream test retains the int64_t output-type invocation.

Change: Refactor

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 24453: The change routes PTX binary-operation UDFs through cudf::transform, matching the request to use the shared transform execution path.
  • Issue 24870: The change removes the duplicate binary-operation JIT path, consistent with the listed shared-infrastructure work.
  • Issue 24867: The change deprecates the PTX binary_operation API and forwards its UDF input to cudf::transform, which aligns with interface consolidation.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b3080

Nonempty PTX operations can block asynchronous workloads with a stream synchronization on every call; resolve this performance regression before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the two main changes: dropping the PTX parser and merging the JIT binary_operation into transform. The changeset matches this. The PTX overload in binaryop.cpp now forwards to cudf::transform, the legacy PTX implementation and JIT kernel.cu are removed, and the tests are updated. The title is specific and short, but it uses the term 'PTX Parser' while the diff shows the PTX overload being deprecated and rerouted rather than a parser being dropped, so it is a close match, not an exact one.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description directly matches the changeset. It explains the deprecation and forwarding of the JIT cudf::binary_operation API to cudf::transform, the removal of duplicated implementation, and related compatibility changes.

Approving but looks like we have a segfault in FILTERS_TEST for CUDA 12.9.2. Please fix that and perhaps comment the root cause for it for my curiosity

@mhaseeb123 using EXPECT_THROW and then dereferencing an array afterwards always leads to a segfault if the function actually throws (in this case, the expression threw out of OOM; it has happened in the past before).
And why I recommend ASSERT_THROW and not EXPECT_THROW.
