Description

In #23989, we migrated null masks to cuda::device_buffer<std::byte>. However, this was a mistake: we should have used cuda::device_buffer<cudf::bitmask_type> instead. Change the buffer element type to cudf::bitmask_type and update all call sites accordingly. Add a new function, bitmask_allocation_size_words(), use it in the null mask implementation, and use it in the implementation of bitmask_allocation_size_bytes(). We will migrate the rest of cudf to use bitmask_allocation_size_words() and deprecate bitmask_allocation_size_bytes() in a future PR.

Issue: rapidsai/build-planning#321

In NVIDIA#23989, we migrated null
masks to `cuda::device_buffer<std::byte>`. However, this was a mistake:
we should have used `cuda::device_buffer<cudf::bitmask_type>` instead.
Change the buffer element type to `cudf::bitmask_type` and update all
call sites accordingly. Add a new function,
`bitmask_allocation_size_words()`, use it in the null mask
implementation, use it in the implementation of
`bitmask_allocation_size_bytes()`, and deprecate the latter. We will
migrate the rest of cudf to use `bitmask_allocation_size_words()` in a
future PR.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Refactor
    • Null-mask storage across columns and operations now uses a dedicated bitmask-word type, with allocation sizes measured in words and converted to bytes where needed.
    • Updated C++ and Python interfaces to use typed mask storage. Null handling and operation results remain unchanged.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for null-mask allocation, padding, alignment, and column mask ownership.

Null-mask device buffers and APIs now use cudf::bitmask_type elements instead of bytes. Allocation sizing and copy operations use word counts, and consumers use typed pointers directly. The changes span core C++, I/O, language bindings, benchmarks, and tests.

Changes: Typed Null-Mask Buffers

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bitmask allocation and operations
cpp/include/cudf/null_mask.hpp, cpp/src/bitmask/null_mask.cu, cpp/include/cudf/detail/null_mask.*, cpp/tests/bitmask/*
Null-mask allocation, copying, AND/OR, and segmented operations use bitmask-typed buffers. Allocation size is calculated in words. Tests cover allocation size, alignment, initialized contents, and typed mask use.
Column storage and mask producers
cpp/include/cudf/column/*, cpp/src/column/*, cpp/src/transform/*, cpp/src/structs/*, cpp/benchmarks/common/*
Column storage, setters, factories, and mask-producing utilities use cudf::bitmask_type buffers. Capacity checks and copy sizes account for the byte size of each bitmask element.
Algorithm and I/O consumers
cpp/src/groupby/*, cpp/src/join/*, cpp/src/lists/*, cpp/src/reductions/*, cpp/src/strings/*, cpp/src/search/*, cpp/src/interop/*, cpp/src/io/*
Consumers use typed masks and pass their data pointers directly to bitmask operations. I/O paths calculate byte counts from bitmask element counts.
Bindings, benchmarks, and supporting tests
python/pylibcudf/*, java/src/main/native/src/*, cpp/benchmarks/bitmask/*, cpp/tests/*
Cython and JNI declarations use typed mask buffers. Benchmarks and tests use typed mask pointers and account for their byte sizes.

Callers requesting non-word-aligned padding can receive a size that violates the documented allocation contract. No in-tree caller was found using a nondefault boundary, so the issue is bounded, but the API contract remains incorrect at this head.

Complete the new allocation-size API declaration. Add [[nodiscard]] to bitmask_allocation_size_words. Document the exception for padding_boundary == 0, which the implementation rejects. As per coding guidelines, “Use [[nodiscard]] on side-effect-free functions with non-void return” and “Doxygen documentation required (@brief, @param, @return, @throw, @tparam).”

NVIDIA/cudf#24590 changes the null mask API
to use `cuda::device_buffer<cudf::bitmask_type>`. Update usage
accordingly, and use the new `cudf::bitmask_allocation_size_words()`
function.
