CommitLens

A desktop app for visualizing your GitHub activity. See commit timelines, track streaks, and get AI-powered insights across all your repos.

Built with Electron + React.

What it does

  • Connects to GitHub via OAuth (no token pasting)
  • Shows a visual git timeline with branch lanes and commit details
  • Tracks commits, active days, streaks, and refactor ratios per repo
  • Generates AI analysis using GitHub Models or your own OpenAI key
  • Persists insights locally per repo so they're there when you come back

Setup

You'll need a GitHub OAuth App with Device Flow enabled.

  1. Go to GitHub → Settings → Developer Settings → OAuth Apps → New OAuth App
  2. Set the callback URL to anything (e.g. http://localhost)
  3. Enable Device Flow in the app settings
  4. Copy the Client ID into a .env file:
VITE_GITHUB_CLIENT_ID=your_client_id_here

Then:

yarn install
yarn electron:dev

Stack

  • Electron, React, TypeScript, Vite
  • Tailwind CSS + shadcn/ui
  • GitHub REST API + GitHub Models (AI)
  • IndexedDB via idb for local persistence
