feat: record Unity motion with source-frame playback control - #1505
Add one recording workflow that discovers a motion source, resolves a source-frame range, controls playback and captures the resulting Unity view. An agent can turn “record Intro from frame 30 for three seconds at 1080p/60 FPS” into a validated plan, start it asynchronously and return a finalized artifact. Source FPS and output FPS are independent, so changing export FPS does not move the requested start frame.
Type of Change
New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
Documentation update
Test update
Changes Made
Add matching Python MCP, Unity C# and CLI interfaces for capabilities, discovery, prepare/start/status/stop/cancel.
Capture composited Game View UI, an explicit camera, or the Scene View camera using the Editor encoder (MP4/WebM) or PNG sequences.
Drive Timeline, AnimationClip, Animator states/parameters, optional DOTween root tweens/sequences, and project state machines through an opt-in IRecordingPlaybackSource contract. DOTween has no compile-time dependency.
Support explicit source-frame/time ranges, fixed-step sampling, realtime capture, resolution/FPS/duration validation and source disambiguation, including multiple clips inside imported assets.
Reject case variants of protected Unity output roots on all platforms, and stop client polling on every terminal state before checking artifact readiness.
Add bounded jobs, retry idempotency across domain reloads, cancellation/interruption cleanup, playback/settings restoration, partial-file publication and JSON manifests.
Preserve all prepared/active job IDs and retry keys under history pressure. Evict terminal history first and return a capacity error when all 32 slots are occupied by unfinished jobs.
Bind the actual motion source and capture camera during preparation. Reusing a name does not redirect the recording; destroyed bindings or replaced selected motion resources fail preflight without creating output artifacts.
Include an importable UI recording demo, regression tests, generated tool reference and an agent workflow for translating natural-language requirements into explicit recording parameters. Natural-language interpretation stays in the MCP client model; the plugin executes the resolved specification.
Compatibility / Package Source
Tested: macOS ARM, Unity 2023.2.3f1, Python 3.12.
Package source: local file: package from this branch, based on beta commit ed4e205d31a545bac3686d5e19210e67959aeddd.
Git-package lock hash: not applicable to the local file package.
The four editors configured in the version matrix were unavailable locally; their checks were skipped, not passed. Additional Unity/platform verification is still needed.
Testing/Screenshots/Recordings
Python tests: 1611 passed, 18 skipped.
Unity EditMode recording tests: 43 passed, including real camera/PNG capture, frame-range semantics, capacity pressure, stable source/camera bindings, replaced resources, cancellation and restoration.
Unity PlayMode recording tests: 5 passed, checking recorded source-frame poses, prepared target identity after names are reused, controller replacement rejection and restoration of the original Animator/controller.
Local package import and compilation against real Unity Runtime/Editor references.
Recorded real MP4 output from Timeline, AnimationClip, Animator, custom states and an official DOTween DLL installed only in the local test project.
Verified the Timeline 1080p/60 FPS/3-second output with ffprobe: H.264, 1920×1080, 60/1 FPS, 180 frames, 3.000 seconds.
Exercised realtime capture, early stop, cancel, script-reload interruption and replaying the same request ID after reload.
Added 25 Unity regression cases for job capacity, prepared binding behavior and case variants of reserved output roots. A captured-pixel assertion verifies the original camera remains selected when its name is reused.
With a real DOTween DLL, verified that an old plan rejects a replacement tween using the same ID; a fresh plan then records the replacement successfully.
Reproduction: import Motion recording demo, run Window > MCP for Unity > Create Recording Demo, enter Play Mode, wait for readiness, discover targets, then use the example in the recording guide.
Documentation Updates
Added a tool and documented its lifecycle, specification, playback adapter contract and limitations.
Regenerated reference pages and checked them with tools/generate_docs_reference.py --check.
Manually reviewed generated changes and updated both distributed skill copies.
Additional Notes
This implementation records silent video. Game View captures the composited viewport; camera/Scene View captures exclude Overlay UI and editor chrome/gizmos. Output dimensions fit/letterbox the current viewport instead of reflowing it.
Fixed-step mode controls the selected motion source; arbitrary physics, particles, scripts and event side effects are not guaranteed to replay deterministically or roll back. Project-specific state machines use the explicit adapter contract. Encoder availability remains platform dependent; PNG sequences provide a fallback.
The change is submitted as one complete feature for review.

The server and CLI expose recording actions and validate their parameters. RecordingPlan validates capture settings, timing, frame counts, and output paths.
Playback adapters and demo source MCPForUnity/Runtime/Recording/IRecordingPlaybackSource.cs, MCPForUnity/Editor/Tools/Recording/RecordingPlayback.cs, MCPForUnity/Samples~/Recording/*, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/PlayMode/*
Playback adapters support Timeline, AnimationClip, Animator, custom sources, and DOTween. The sample adds a custom source and demo scene builder. PlayMode tests cover playback and prepared-source binding.
Capture sessions and recording jobs MCPForUnity/Editor/Tools/Recording/RecordingSession.cs, MCPForUnity/Runtime/Recording/RecordingFramePump.cs, MCPForUnity/Editor/Tools/Recording/ManageRecording.cs, TestProjects/UnityMCPTests/Assets/Tests/EditMode/Tools/ManageRecordingTests.cs
RecordingSession samples playback, captures and resizes frames, writes output and a manifest, and finalizes jobs. ManageRecording handles preparation, starting, status, stopping, cancellation, history, and retries. Tests cover validation, capture, restoration, and cancellation.
The manifest and catalogs list manage_recording. Skill and website pages document discovery, planning, capture options, job controls, and artifact handling. Package metadata registers the demo sample and Director module dependency.
