fix: throttle media polling and make MPRIS requests nonblocking - #711
MediaSource::update() never advances its polling deadline, so rendering can issue MPRIS queries every frame. Failed requests also leak DBusError allocations.
A reply timeout alone does not make synchronous discovery safe: libdbus flushes outgoing messages before starting that wait, and multiple unresponsive players stall rendering in sequence. Failed metadata fetches are not retried, and a player that repeatedly fails Position can prevent discovery of a healthy alternative.
Changes
Advance the existing polling deadline before performing an update.
Replace blocking calls with one pending request and an asynchronous discovery/property state machine driven by update().
Start a 250 ms monotonic deadline before enqueueing. Read and dispatch available replies before applying expiry; completed replies take priority over the elapsed application deadline. Only incomplete expired requests are canceled. No blocking flush or reply wait is used in this path.
Pump I/O with a zero timeout, including immediately after enqueueing, and dispatch at most 16 messages per update. Apply completed replies after each dispatched message, before later signals. Check incomplete-request expiry after the batch. Do not enqueue another request while an earlier message remains unsent.
Accept PropertiesChanged only on /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 from a current owner of a discovered MPRIS service. Resolve startup owners with asynchronous GetNameOwner requests, follow NameOwnerChanged only from the bus daemon, and revoke selection/property work when the last MPRIS name is lost. Discovery status replies must match the registered service owner. Preserve the owner inventory if a valid signal selects a player during discovery.
Retain metadata retry state after errors, while still checking Position.
Exclude a player whose Position fails for 10 seconds, by both unique owner and known service name. Continue discovery past failed candidates and remove expired exclusions.
Cancel obsolete requests when the selected player changes, ignore stale property results, and check reply/value types before parsing.
Use a privately owned connection, release requests/replies with the existing cleanup pattern, and release the startup DBusError.
Add regression cases for interval throttling, pending-call expiry, metadata retry, A-to-B recovery, cancellation on player changes, and completed/buffered Position replies after an elapsed application deadline.
Results and listeners remain on the render thread because artwork listeners use OpenGL. These changes avoid waiting for MPRIS responses; they do not establish a hard real-time bound for the entire update. Initial bus connection/registration remains synchronous at startup.
Validation
Reviewed callers, resource ownership, state transitions, test registration, and the diff. git diff --check passed.
This asynchronous revision has not been built or run. The earlier synchronous patch had a separate local build/ASan harness; those results do not validate this revision. The installed local binaries have not been replaced.
The interval test needs no bus. The hidden D-Bus case combines synthetic state-transition replies with a private-bus peer that returns a real Position reply. Two sections force the application deadline into the past while that reply is completed or still unread in the socket, then check that position is updated without excluding the healthy player. Additional cases queue a Playing discovery reply before Paused/Stopped signals, and a signal before a Position reply with an expired application deadline. Owner-validation cases cover an unrelated peer with a forged ownership announcement, startup GetNameOwner discovery, and name release/replacement while the previous owner remains connected. An explicit environment guard is checked before opening any connection. After building the existing test target, run it in a private session:
A stalled-bus transport stress test and a full build/runtime check remain outstanding.
The mpv OpenGL-fence fix is already upstream in mpv-player/mpv#17303 and is outside this PR. Desktop memory observations with both fixes installed cannot isolate savings attributable to this change.

MediaSource polling now advances its deadline from a captured time. DBusMediaSource uses validated signals and asynchronous requests to discover players and update status, metadata, and position. Tests cover polling intervals and D-Bus request handling.

Summary
Polling schedule and interval tests src/WallpaperEngine/Media/MediaSource.cpp, src/WallpaperEngine/Media/MediaSource.h, src/WallpaperEngine/Testing/Cases/MediaSource.cpp, CMakeLists.txt
MediaSource::update captures the current time, checks the deadline, and sets the next deadline before performing an update. The test checks repeated updates within an interval and an update after expiration. CMake adds the test source to the test executable.
D-Bus connection and input validation src/WallpaperEngine/Media/DBusMediaSource.cpp, src/WallpaperEngine/Media/DBusMediaSource.h
DBusMediaSource uses a private connection and validates signal sources, signatures, and property types. Playback status and position parsing reject values of the wrong type.
Asynchronous requests and player recovery src/WallpaperEngine/Media/DBusMediaSource.cpp, src/WallpaperEngine/Media/DBusMediaSource.h, src/WallpaperEngine/Testing/Cases/MediaSource.cpp
DBusMediaSource dispatches at most 16 messages per update and uses asynchronous requests with 250 ms deadlines. It manages player selection, metadata and position polling, request cancellation, and a 10-second failed-player cooldown. Opt-in private-bus tests cover expiration, retries, exclusion, discovery, and switching players.
After a player fails, playback may still appear active until another state update arrives. This is a bounded issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Validate signal senders before selecting a player.
messageFilter accepts any non-excluded sender. A session-bus peer can emit the matching PropertiesChanged signal on /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2, and parsePlaybackStatus then selects that unique sender without checking the discovered MPRIS services. The code reports Playing and starts property requests for the unrelated peer before a failed request excludes it.
Require the sender to match the owner of a discovered MPRIS service before calling selectPlayer. The existing sender and service checks in completeRequest do not protect this signal path.

@coderabbitai Addressed the outside-diff finding “Validate signal senders before selecting a player” from your review in 7f94c77.
PropertiesChanged now requires the MPRIS object path and a sender present in the current service-to-owner registry. Startup discovery resolves each MPRIS name with asynchronous GetNameOwner requests; only bus-daemon NameOwnerChanged signals may update that registry. Losing the last MPRIS name revokes the selected peer and cancels its pending property work, while a replacement owner can be selected normally. Discovery status replies also have to match the registered owner. A valid Playing signal during startup preserves the remaining owner inventory.
Added private-session regression cases for an unrelated peer/forged ownership announcement, startup owner discovery, and name release/replacement while the former owner remains connected. Updated existing fixtures to own real MPRIS names. These tests and a build have not been run. Source review and git diff --check passed; the exported patch also passes git apply --check against the pinned source with the companion crop patch.
The matching patch and source revision are published in kisa-stack. No installed binaries or running desktop session were changed.
Reset playbackState when failPlayer() clears the selection.
failPlayer() clears m_currentPlayer after a failed or timed-out Position request. It does not update m_mediaInfo.playbackState.
If no other player is found, getMediaInfo ().playbackState stays Playing with stale metadata and no selected player. Nothing resets it. A new Playing status is the only thing that changes it.
resetUnownedPlayer() handles the same "no selected player" case. It sets Stopped and calls fireMetadataListeners (). failPlayer() should do the same.

@howdeploy Source inspection of 7f94c7739b83790c384ded3c03074763495eeb3a supports the reported fix:
PropertiesChanged requires the MPRIS object path and a registered owner.
Ownership updates require authenticated bus-daemon signals or GetNameOwner replies.
Discovery status replies must match the registered owner.
Losing the last MPRIS name clears the selected player and cancels pending property requests.
The regression cases cover forged ownership announcements, startup owner discovery, and name release/replacement while the former owner remains connected.
Build and runtime verification remain outstanding. Before merging, build this revision and run the private-session tests:
The stalled-bus transport stress check also remains outstanding. Source inspection does not replace these checks.
