Target Mapper is a local Manifest V3 extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge. It opens in the browser side panel and does not access a page until you invoke the toolbar action or approve the side panel's Connect request.
- Download and unzip the Target Mapper browser app.
- Open
chrome://extensionsin Chrome oredge://extensionsin Edge. - Turn on Developer mode.
- Choose Load unpacked and select the unzipped
target-mapperfolder. - Pin Target Mapper, open any regular website, and click its toolbar button. The toolbar click grants temporary access and attaches the side panel to that exact tab.
- Highlights and selects rendered elements on the active page.
- Ranks test IDs, element IDs, accessible roles, labels, visible text, and structural CSS locators.
- Detects React, Vue, or instrumented component metadata when the page exposes it.
- Saves target contracts in local extension storage.
- Captures click, focus, and text-entry actions with explicit assertions.
- Guides the workflow through connect, choose, define, then export.
- Uses a streamlined business interface with persistent dark and light themes plus Standard, Large, and XL text sizes.
- Exports JSON contracts plus Playwright or Selenium Python code from one framework picker.
The toolbar action uses activeTab for temporary access to the exact tab. If the panel was opened from the browser's general side-panel menu, Connect requests optional access to regular HTTP and HTTPS websites. The browser stores that optional grant until you revoke it in the extension's site-access settings. Target Mapper does not use remote code or transmit inspected page data.
Chrome blocks extension scripts on browser-internal pages, the Chrome Web Store, and some protected surfaces. Source-file and line-number discovery also depends on framework development metadata, source maps, or explicit data-source instrumentation being available to the page.
If the panel was opened from the browser's general side-panel menu, click Connect and approve the browser permission prompt. You can instead click the Target Mapper toolbar icon to grant temporary activeTab access without the broader optional grant.
