Summary

Workflow execution hard-codes one agent-loop step per durable Workflow step, so applications cannot trade some cancellation latency for fewer physical Workflow steps. This adds the root agent.ts opt-in experimental.workflow.agentStepsPerWorkflowStep, validates and compiles it as a positive integer, and keeps 1 as the default.

Before starting another logical step, eve journals the completed session and context against the physical step's stable stepId; a physical retry resumes from the latest journal entry. Sleep, background-task launch, HITL, authorization, and runtime-action waits remain batching barriers.

Validation

After rebasing onto current main, focused authored-definition, manifest, and workflow-step unit coverage passes (109 tests), as do the five-test durable-session integration suite and the installed-extension scenario. eve and E2E-config typechecks, lint, and the invariant guard also pass.

The shared E2E root-agent config opts fixtures into agentStepsPerWorkflowStep: 5. Postgres cancellation fixtures use 1 because that world cannot interrupt a live multi-step physical step, and the cross-version channel fixture omits the setting because it temporarily builds with eve@0.30.8; the rest of the Local, Vercel, and Postgres matrices retain 5.

The batching transaction and Workflow journal preserve logical checkpoints and cancellation-safe state. The public configuration is validated, compiled, resolved at runtime, and recorded in the generated extension capability contract.

Tests — 11 files · +572 / -26

Coverage exercises configuration validation plus populated and empty retry journals, per-step setup, commit barriers, cancellation, steering, sleep, and background-task boundaries. E2E fixtures apply batch size five except where world or historical-version compatibility requires the one-step default.
