the encoders are hotglued & wedged into position, and the magnets are just sitting on the axle coming out of the gearbox. this mounting isn't ideal, because either the magnet or the encoders can easily move out of position and then start giving erroneous data (like skipping encoder ticks here & there, or spewing noise) which is difficult to track down.
