I'm Brayan Kai, a Data Scientist and Technical Writer passionate about Open Source, based in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪.

I do one thing in many different formats: I take AI and data knowledge and turn it into free, hands-on material that developers here can actually use. That means open-source projects, technical writing, and a great deal of on-stage teaching.

What I build and give away

• Obi-Kaya — a smart community assistant agent built with ADK and Gemini, for community organizers and DevRel folks in Sub-Saharan Africa. It reads your community data and returns event ideas, engagement strategy, and a ready-to-send partnership pitch. It responds in most African languages. Organizers and workshop participants have forked it over 240 times.
• Workshop and session repos — every talk I give ships with a public repo, so you don't have to have been in the room to learn from it. TalksandEvents and my Sessionize Profile are the running index of all of them.
• Technical writing — tutorials on Python, data science, ML fairness, and responsible AI on DEV, Hashnode, and She Code Africa Nairobi. I also translate freeCodeCamp material into Swahili, because learning to code in your first language shouldn't be a luxury.

Where I show up

Sessionize has listed me as a Most Active Speaker for three consecutive years (2023, 2024, 2025). I've taught at DevFests, Meetups, and PyCons across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Nigeria; at the Open Source Festival in Lagos; at the Open Source Summit Europe in Vienna; and at CodeMash in Ohio , 100+ talks and sessions across four continents so far. Offstage, I co-lead GDG Nairobi, run programs for WTM Pwani, and volunteer with Open Source Community Africa Nairobi, CHAOSS Project Africa, Black Python Devs, and the GitHub Campus Experts program. I am also a Google Developer Expert for Cloud AI.

Why does this need sponsoring

I have a day job as a Data Scientist. This isn't it. Everything above happens on evenings, weekends, and annual leave ,and it carries real costs that nobody invoices anyone for:

• Cloud and API credits. The agents, cloud demos, and notebooks I publish cost money every time I build or re-run them. Free tiers run out fast when 200 people fork your workshop.
• Getting to the room. Most community events across the continent can't cover a speaker. Every volunteer-led event, campus meetup, and study jam I say yes to comes out of my own pocket.
• Hosting, domains, and recording gear, so the material outlives the event.
• Time. Hours spent writing, translating into Swahili, and reviewing other people's first contributions are hours I'm not billing anyone for.

Sponsoring me doesn't fund my salary. It funds the part of my work that has no business model: free material, in the open, for developers who are usually last in line for it.
