fix(updates): go back to the appVersion runtime version policy - #929
Conversation
The fingerprint policy makes EAS compare the fingerprint from the runner with the fingerprint from the build folder. The two values differ, so every iOS production build fails at the Configure expo-updates phase. Use appVersion until the cause is found. The fingerprint config stays, because the OTA or native decision still uses it.

Guard native builds from non-main branches when the version is already released.
appVersion uses VERSION as the runtime version. A native build from a non-main branch keeps the current VERSION, even when that version already has a release tag. The build can therefore share a runtime version with older binaries and receive an OTA that requires the new native code.
Add a guard for native builds where !isMainBranch && isReleased, or assign such builds a distinct runtime version.

Why
iOS production builds still fail in
deploy-ota-or-nativewith "Runtime version mismatch" after #928 (failed run). With the
fingerprintpolicy, EAS compares the fingerprint from the runner checkout with the fingerprint from the build folder. The hashes are the same as before #928 (runnercbb67b4…, build1314dea…), so the plist was not the cause of this mismatch. The real cause is not found yet, and the policy blocks every native release. How
runtimeVersion: { - policy: 'fingerprint', + policy: 'appVersion', },This reverts the
app.config.tspart of #924. WithappVersion, EAS does not compare fingerprints at build time.fingerprint.config.jsstays. The OTA-or-native decision indeploy-ota-or-nativeand the PR comments fromdetect-fp-changesstill use it.The plist fix from #928 also stays.
Test Plan
runtimeVersion.policyisappVersionagain, as it was at the last green native deploy (9db6127).README.mdalready documentsappVersion.deploy-ota-or-nativeforproduction/ios. The Configure expo-updates phase should pass.Merge Danger
Door: two-way. Set the policy back to
fingerprintonce the mismatch is fixed.Blast Radius: OTA compatibility.
With
appVersion, an OTA update reaches every build with the same app version. The deploy workflow still chooses a native build when the fingerprint changes. A native change that ships without a version bump could still get an incompatible OTA, which is the same risk as before #924.
