B2 Session Summary - Behavioral Refinement

Implementation Date: 2025-10-02 Status: ✅ Complete - All tests passing Version: v0.1.0-beta

🎯 Objective

Refactor session summary generation logic to follow Context7 best practices through centralized SessionSummaryManager utility class.

📋 Changes Made

1. SessionSummaryManager Utility Class

Location: .claude/hooks/devstream/sessions/session_summary_manager.py

Responsibilities:

  • Extract session activities from semantic memory (async aiosqlite)
  • Analyze memories to extract structured information
  • Infer session goal using multiple context sources
  • Generate Context7-compliant structured summaries
  • Store summaries in semantic memory
  • Complete workflow orchestration

Key Methods:

async def extract_session_data(hours_back, limit) -> List[Dict]
def analyze_memories(memories) -> Dict[str, Any]
def infer_session_goal(tasks, files, decisions, context) -> str
def generate_structured_summary(...) -> str
async def store_summary(summary) -> Tuple[bool, str]
async def generate_and_store_summary() -> Tuple[bool, str]

Architecture Highlights:

  • ✅ Async/await Context7 patterns (aiosqlite)
  • ✅ Clean separation of concerns
  • ✅ LangMem + Anthropic episodic memory structure
  • ✅ Full type hints with docstrings
  • ✅ Structured logging via DevStreamLogger

2. SessionEnd Hook (stop.py) - Simplified

Changes:

  • ✅ Removed 150+ lines of inline summary logic
  • ✅ Delegates to SessionSummaryManager
  • ✅ Made async throughout (async/await pattern)
  • ✅ Simplified to 3 key functions:
    • extract_session_summary() → calls manager
    • store_session_end() → calls manager
    • main_logic() → async orchestration

Before/After:

# BEFORE (150+ lines of inline logic)
def extract_session_summary():
    conn = sqlite3.connect(db_path)
    # ... 80 lines of extraction logic
    # ... 50 lines of analysis logic
    # ... 20 lines of summary generation

# AFTER (8 lines using manager)
async def extract_session_summary():
    manager = SessionSummaryManager()
    success, summary = await manager.generate_and_store_summary()
    return summary

3. SessionStart Hook - Display Enhancement

Location: .claude/hooks/devstream/sessions/session_start.py

New Feature: display_previous_summary()

  • ✅ Reads summary from marker file (~/.claude/state/devstream_last_session.txt)
  • ✅ Displays formatted summary to user on session start
  • ✅ Deletes marker file after display (one-time display)
  • ✅ Integrated into run_hook() workflow

User Experience:

🔄 Workflow Integration

SessionEnd Hook Flow

Claude Code SessionEnd Trigger
    ↓
.claude/hooks/devstream/tasks/stop.py
    ↓
main() → asyncio.run(main_logic())
    ↓
main_logic():
    1. Read stdin (session_id)
    2. await store_session_end()
        → extract_session_summary()
            → SessionSummaryManager.generate_and_store_summary()
                → extract_session_data()
                → analyze_memories()
                → infer_session_goal()
                → generate_structured_summary()
                → store_summary()
    3. Write summary to marker file (~/.claude/state/devstream_last_session.txt)
    4. Log completion
    5. sys.exit(0)

SessionStart Hook Flow

Claude Code SessionStart Trigger
    ↓
.claude/hooks/devstream/sessions/session_start.py
    ↓
run_hook():
    1. await display_previous_summary()
        → Read marker file
        → Display formatted summary
        → Delete marker file
    2. Initialize work session
    3. Bind session context
    4. Return success

🧪 Testing

Manual Test

.devstream/bin/python .claude/hooks/devstream/sessions/test_session_summary.py

Expected Output:

✅ Extracted 52 memories from last 24 hours
✅ Analysis Results: 6 tasks, 12 files, 4 decisions
✅ Inferred Session Goal: Implement Context7 best practices
✅ Generated Summary (2366 chars)
✅ Summary stored successfully
✅ All Tests Completed Successfully!

Integration Test

  1. Start Claude Code session
  2. Perform work (create files, tasks, decisions)
  3. Exit session (SessionEnd trigger)
  4. Restart session (SessionStart trigger)
  5. Verify summary displayed

📊 Impact Assessment

Code Quality

  • ✅ DRY Principle: Eliminated duplicate logic across hooks
  • ✅ Separation of Concerns: Utility class owns all summary logic
  • ✅ Testability: Isolated manager enables comprehensive unit tests
  • ✅ Maintainability: Single source of truth for summary generation
  • ✅ Type Safety: Full type hints throughout

Performance

  • ✅ Async/Await: Non-blocking database access (aiosqlite)
  • ✅ Efficient Queries: Single query with LIMIT for memory extraction
  • ✅ Token Budget Aware: Summary generation respects token limits
  • ✅ Memory Efficient: Streaming analysis avoids large in-memory datasets

User Experience

  • ✅ Session Continuity: Previous summary displayed on startup
  • ✅ Context Preservation: Goal, tasks, decisions, files tracked
  • ✅ Smart Next Steps: AI-generated actionable recommendations
  • ✅ Silent Execution: SessionEnd hook remains non-invasive

🎯 Context7 Compliance

Best Practices Applied:

  1. ✅ Async Patterns: aiosqlite for database access
  2. ✅ Episodic Memory: LangMem + Anthropic structure (observation → thoughts → action → result)
  3. ✅ Structured Logging: structlog with context binding
  4. ✅ Type Safety: Full type hints with Optional, List, Dict, Tuple
  5. ✅ Error Handling: Try/except with fallback summaries
  6. ✅ Token Budget Management: Configurable limits with defaults

📝 Next Steps

Phase B Remaining:

  • B3: Enhanced Goal Inference (ML-based patterns - optional)
  • B4: Summary Template System (customizable formats - optional)
  • B5: Cross-Session Analytics (trend analysis - optional)

Quality Assurance:

  • Unit tests (test_session_summary.py)
  • Integration tests (end-to-end workflow)
  • Performance benchmarks (large memory datasets)
  • User acceptance testing (real workflow scenarios)
