build: use an API key for macOS notarization - #3775
macOS releases currently require Apple ID password credentials even when an App Store Connect API key is available. Use APPLE_API_KEY, APPLE_API_KEY_ID and APPLE_API_ISSUER for notarization while keeping Developer ID certificate signing and the existing publication checks.
The packaging step converts the secret's PEM content to a private temporary file, clears password variables so electron-builder selects API authentication, and removes the file on success or failure. Update the release helper, setup documentation and signing verification command. The App Store upload key remains separate.
Rebuilding older tags also works: key preparation is fetched from the workflow commit, and explicit electron-builder options enable notarization and Hardened Runtime even when the tag still has password-based defaults. A regression exercises a historical checkout without the helper and validates the overrides with the pinned builder’s real CLI/configuration parser.
Validation: 83 targeted notarization, release-helper and signing-report tests pass. Tests cover the API-enabled build, incomplete credentials, key-file permissions, cleanup after failure and absence of password fallback. Existing packaging-script tests now run from the workflow's Electron working directory. Bash syntax and diff checks pass. A read-only notarytool history request authenticated successfully with the newly provisioned Developer-role key. No release or notarization submission was started.
macOS notarization now uses APPLE_API_KEY, APPLE_API_KEY_ID, and APPLE_API_ISSUER; the workflow writes the PEM secret to a private temporary file and enables notarization and Hardened Runtime for older tags. This keeps notarization credentials separate from App Store upload credentials while retaining Developer ID signing and publication checks. No current review findings or test-run results were supplied.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The macOS release flow now uses App Store Connect API-key credentials for notarization. The workflow prepares a temporary key file before packaging. Release configuration, signing verification, documentation, and tests reflect the credential change. The Python test job also installs Electron dependencies before running pytest.
Changes: macOS notarization credential migration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
API-key preparation and validation scripts/prepare-apple-notarization.sh, electron/electron-builder.config.mjs, tests/test_macos_notarization_api.py
The helper validates API credentials, writes the key to a restricted temporary file, exports its path, clears legacy Apple ID credentials, and removes the file on exit. The builder configuration checks API credentials when determining whether to notarize. Tests cover credential validation, file permissions, cleanup, and output handling.
The workflow downloads and sources the helper, passes API credentials and prepared arguments to electron-builder, and requires API credentials for signed publication unless unsigned publication is allowed. Release credential names and packaging tests reflect this flow.
Notarization verification and documentation scripts/verify-macos-signing.sh, docs/RELEASING.md, docs/install/macos.md, docs/macos-signing-verification.md, changelog.d/3775.changed.md
Notary-history checks accept a keychain profile or API-key credentials. The documentation and changelog describe the credentials, temporary key-file handling, and signing-status guidance.
Electron dependency setup for Python test CI
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Install Electron dependencies before tests .github/workflows/ci.yml, tests/test_ci_pytest_parallel.py, .github/CONTRIBUTING.md
The Python test job caches Bun dependencies and installs Electron dependencies with the frozen lockfile before pytest. Contributor instructions and a workflow test reflect that setup.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the summary, the packaging behavior, the older-tag handling, and the validation results. It explains the reason for the change and lists the updated files. It does not fill in the template's Changes list, Type checkboxes, or Checklist. It also omits the required changelog fragment reference and the issue reference that the title requirements call for. The author did add a changelog fragment (changelog.d/3775.changed.md), so the check is met in substance, but the template sections are not filled in.
Full details: Cross-Platform Default Parity
Explanation
The PR does not introduce a cross-platform out-of-the-box application default. The changed notarization behavior is limited to macOS release jobs and is enabled only when explicit Apple API and Developer ID environment credentials are present; Windows and Linux packaging paths remain unchanged.
Full details: I18n Completeness (21 Locales)
Explanation
The pull request changes no Electron UI source or locale files. The only Electron change is electron/electron-builder.config.mjs, which updates notarization environment checks and adds no t('...') keys or user-facing UI strings. No i18n completeness issue is introduced.
Full details: Backward Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request changes macOS release notarization, CI setup, documentation, and tests. The runtime diff contains no changes to database schemas, Alembic migrations, omnivoice_data storage, voices, projects, settings, engine installation, model downloads, or packaged model resources. The Electron resource configuration is unchanged between the base and head revisions, so no manual migration, engine reinstall, or model re-download is introduced.
Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "build: use an API key for macOS notarization" accurately describes the main change: switching macOS notarization from Apple ID/app-specific password/team ID to an App Store Connect API key. It uses a conventional-commit prefix but has no scope and no issue reference in the title. The title requirements call for a scope such as "build(electron): ..." and an issue reference in the title or body. The PR body does not contain an issue reference either.
Resolution
Add a scope to the title, for example "build(electron): use an API key for macOS notarization". Add the issue reference in the title or the PR body, for example "Closes #N". Do not change the version.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 8 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
Full details: Local-First Guarantee
Explanation
The PR adds two non-sanctioned release-path requirements. .github/workflows/electron-release.yml:200-207 requires a GitHub Contents API call to fetch the helper, and .github/workflows/electron-release.yml:210-226 requires three Apple API credentials for signed macOS publication; the helper and builder then enable Apple notarization (scripts/prepare-apple-notarization.sh:13-21, electron/electron-builder.config.mjs:127-135). Neither operation appears in the sanctioned list at .github/CONTRIBUTING.md:487-545, and no owner approval or policy exception is present.
Resolution
Remove the required GitHub Contents API fetch and Apple API-key notarization requirement, or obtain owner approval and add both operations to the sanctioned list. Keep the release path usable without these cloud calls and credentials.

Update the stale release-status statement. The earlier Gatekeeper section still says release builds are not notarized because CI lacks signing secrets, which conflicts with the workflow described at Lines [153-156]. Replace that statement with the current Developer ID signing and notarization requirements.

Use the real historical configuration in the historical-checkout test.
The test creates a synthetic two-field configuration at tests/test_macos_notarization_api.py:99-100, so the pinned builder never loads the legacy credential-derived configuration used by the release workflow. A real historical configuration or an exact fixture with its companion files is needed to detect incompatibilities in those defaults before applying the CLI overrides.

Update the historical-checkout test to use the release workflow’s legacy
credential-derived configuration, or an exact fixture with its required
companion files, instead of the synthetic two-field configuration; ensure the
pinned builder loads that configuration before applying CLI overrides.
