Docker Build Fails While Downloading Apache Hop via wget (Exit Code 1)

I hope you're all doing well. I am currently trying to deploy Apache Hop on a server using Railway.com, but I am facing an issue while building my Docker image. The build fails at the wget command with the following error:

ERROR: failed to solve: process "/bin/sh -c apt-get update && apt-get install -y wget unzip
&& wget https://downloads.apache.org/hop/${HOP_VERSION}/apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION}.zip
&& unzip apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION}.zip -d /opt/
&& mv /opt/apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION} /opt/hop
&& rm apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION}.zip" did not complete successfully: exit code: 1

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Create a Dockerfile:

FROM ubuntu:latest

ENV HOP_VERSION=2.5.0

RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y wget unzip
&& wget https://downloads.apache.org/hop/${HOP_VERSION}/apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION}.zip
&& unzip apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION}.zip -d /opt/
&& mv /opt/apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION} /opt/hop
&& rm apache-hop-client-${HOP_VERSION}.zip

2. Build the Docker image:

docker build -t apache-hop .

3. Observe the failure in logs.

What I Have Tried:

• Running wget inside a running container manually.
• Checking URL validity in a browser (it works).
• Replacing wget with curl, but still no success.
• Adding ca-certificates to fix SSL issues.

Possible Issues & Questions:

• Could wget be failing due to SSL verification?
• Is $HOP_VERSION not getting substituted correctly?
• Are there network restrictions in Railway that prevent downloading external files?

The wget command should download the Apache Hop zip file, and the image should be built successfully.

Hi there,

I have no experience with Railway you could try to do following changes.

The official download URL is https://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.cgi?filename=hop/2.12.0/apache-hop-client-2.12.0.zip&action=download, which will redirect to https://dlcdn.apache.org/hop/2.12.0/apache-hop-client-2.12.0.zip

Docker also suggests using ADD instead of wget inside the container when downloading files.

your command still refers to ${HOP_VERSION}, so it looks like the version variable value isn't substituted. Also, (1) why don't you use the default docker image and (2) 2.5.0 is an ancient version.

You can add a debug option for shell script: RUN set -x; apt-get...other_command..."
